OE 6.0 files aren't in the identities folder
« on: October 08, 2006, 11:25:41 PM »
Hi,

A few weeks back my bf found 2 trojan horse viruses on my comp. He deleted the viruses and then took his own hard drive/motherboard, etc and gave it to me, with my old c (main) drive becoming my secondary. When he tried importing the outlook express files from my drive onto his, he couldn't find them in any folder -- he did a system search including hidden files and there was nothing. But he did find the address book. He then thought that maybe if he ran the operating system off my drive that somehow he could get them back -- when the computer restarted, the screen kept rolling and nothing would run, so he switched the main drive back to his. I have tried looking/searching everywhere for these files -- when he deleted the viruses could they have somehow deleted my o.e. files too? If so, is there any way to somehow recovery them?????

Thanks :)

Windows doesn't always comply when being placed in a new PC. Can you tell us the exact steps that have been taken with both HDD's?

Hi,

This is what my bf has said about the work done on my comp. Hopefully you'll understand since I don't :)

Computer 1 - Removing HDD and using it as a slave in new computer. I will
label this HDD-1
Computer 2 - I will label this systems primary drive HDD-2

1. Ran virus scan on Computer 1, cleared out viruses and spyware from HDD-1.
Dissassembled system, placed HDD-1 in Computer 2 as a slave.
2. Booted Computer two, checked BIOS settings, everything was fine. Booted
WinXp
3. Ran virus check again on both drives. Both came up clear.
4. Copied personal files from HDD-1, to HDD-2 (primary).
5. Ran Outlook Express from HDD-2, tried and failed importing contacts,
emails from HDD-1.
6. Tried to copy and paste HDD-1 Outlook files into HDD-2 Outlook folder.
Nothing.
7. Ran Windows Recovery.
8. Rebooted, everything running fine. Tried to import files again, no luck.
9. Rebooted with HDD-1 as master now, wouldnt boot. Kept rebooting half way
through sequence.
10. Removed HDD-2, leaving HDD-1 alone as master. Still wouldnt boot.
11. Switched Drives back to original. Booted no problem.
12. Removed HDD-1, tried the same thing in another system. No luck booting
HDD-1 as master.

Thanks.

I'm a little confused  :-/...which for me is pretty normal  ;D  Are you looking for both Outlook (.pst) and OE (.dbx)?

Did he do a search for .pst / .dbx files?
