CD/DVD drive doesn't recognize discs (notebook PC)
« on: November 22, 2006, 05:53:44 PM »
I am running Win XP serv pk 2 on a Compaq Presario V4000. I was able to watch, burn, listen to all types of discs. Now the discs aren't even recognized as being loaded. The device manager shows no problems and the driver is the latest available. I have tried different media players (incl. wmp ver 10 & ver 11). System info and diagnostics show no problems with any hardware or devices and I have exhausted all troubleshooters - to no avail. PLEASE  HELP.

If it's under warranty do that. If it isn't you may be looking at a replacement. What happened between when it worked and when it didn't? What are you using for virus/spyware protection?

Do you have a bootable CD you can test with? If it doesn't recognize it even before Windows loads it seems to be a definite hardware problem.

If nothing else use a Linux Live CD to test:
