power supply
« on: November 22, 2006, 05:56:00 AM »
Hi,

I installed a new power supply, everything works great.  What happens?  Click on shut down, everything shuts down, but the power supply stays on.  Anyone have any suggestions as to what I did wrong, or missed?
Thanks
 :)

Well I would say it does NOT work great then. WHat are the details? WHat make and wattage power supply? Computer info? Are you positive eveything is connected correctly?

Do you mean that the fan keeps running?

what I meant by working great, he can get to his sites, mail, etc.  It's an emachines, W2646.  I went to the site, ordered the exact power supply they said for the system.  eMachines enhanced 250 watt power supply.  Yes, it's connected correctly  :)

Yes.  I think it's the fan?  Shut down windows, does that, monitor goes off, something, fan?, is still running.

thanks

Does the PSU have a smart fan? Does it shut down after a period of time (10 to 30 min.)? Some newer PSU's don't immediately stop the fan. They continue to run until the PSU cools to a preset temp.

that's a good question 2k, thanks :), but I don't know.  Just went and looked on the site, doesn't say anything about this PSU, except what I already said.  I just went in and shut it down, I'll wait and see what happens.  Sure would be nice if that's all it is!

waited an hour, and the fan was still running.  Dang.  Now I have to wait, it's my husbands pc, he works midnights, and has gone to sleep.
Thanks, it was a good thought.

Does this power supply have a switch on the back of it?

Turn the power off at the wall socket.

Yes!  It does have a switch on the back of it.  Of course, if I hit that switch the PS turns off.  Gees, does that mean the only way to turn it off, is to hit that switch?  That's a pain, and there was nothing saying that in the paper work.

I don't know the make, no paperwork came with it.  eMachines enhanced 250 watt, is all it said.  This from the eMachines site.  In fact I just went back, again, LOL, to see if I keep missing anything.  Nope.  But, I did just notice the picture they have, does not show a switch on the back.

It's probably just a low-end Chinese knock off. That may be how it is "designed". I hope you didn't pay a lot.  ;)

Stock eMachines generally use Bestec units. They are in a similar category.

ah gees.  It is a stock eMachines.  No, I didn't pay a lot, but if there's no way to work around this, except to buy another PS, then that's money out the window.  Who wants to leave it running all the time, not me.
I'm guessing, that's what you think I should do?  It's an eMachines W2646.
LOL, at myself.  Since I wasn't sure I could even install this, I just bought the same PS.  They did show 2 others, upgrades, but didn't do that.  Maybe I should have?
So, if you don't mind helping me here, what do you suggest?  Deal with leaving it on, try buying a new one, that doesn't have a switch, or just buy a whole new computer.
Thanks for your help, btw.  Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving  :)

Return the EMachines unit and get your money back...
Buy a decent PSU around 400 or 450W and install it yourself.
It's fairly easy just take all electrical and ESD precautions when doing so...
