OK then that eliminates that possibility...what about the drive caddy itself ? ?
Or have you tried another USB cable ? ?

    you said th e hard drive work fine on other computers. right?

    also what is the boot device order.
    Is it posible you were playing around with the BIOS one day and changed the boot order so it is trying to boot an OS of the external?

    One other thing o try can you boot up without the device pluged in

    The boot order is D/C/A as i reinstalled windows to see if that would fix the problem and it didnt.
    I have changed the boot order to C/D/A. same problem.
    I took the external hard drive out of its case completely and connected it to the computer via a ide/usb connector.
    The same problem.
    I then connected an old hard drive i had lying around via this connector and again the computer crashed.


    So in my view its some electronic component has been changed.
