Activate WinXP ???

After reinstalling my OS, I get a prompt that says I have 30 days to activate Win XP.  Just what does this activation do?  My XP seems to work ok.

    It validates your 'real' Windows installation with M$.. Yes, you install will work OK...for 30 days.  After that you will be locked out unless you validate it.
