usb mass storage and win 98
« on: January 12, 2007, 04:26:17 PM »
I have an HP pavillion running windows 98.  just got a usb mass storage stick.  downloaded the driver and can add files one at a time but not folders.  I right click and hit send to and get floppy, desktop, drive m(burner), mail, My Documents, and some sort of web publishing place as a designation.  but no removable disc [D:],  which is the stick.  in the win help in the "send to" section it says you can add a designation but not how. any help will be appreciated.

You're running Win 98 or Win 98SE?  Are you sure the driver you downloaded is for Win 98, not Win 98SE?  I have a PNY USB Flash drive.  I can get a driver for Win 98SE, but not for Win 98.

From the Mothership

Or you could DLoad and install Power Toys for Win98 which has a sendto plugin...

chicharronne, do you see your flash drive in My Computer, as a Removable Disk?  You do know that you can open two Explorer windows and drag folders and/or files from your hard drive to your flash drive, right?

The link you provided applies to Win XP, not to Win 98.

I know about dragging items on one folder to the next on one page but not two.  so if I open my documents then open my usb device I can drag it from one place to another?  how close do I have to get them.
the driver functions and can get a pic to the usb device but not the folder of pics to go.

the link from patio was good but didn't tell me how to add my device

And, of course, you can use the same technique going from the flash drive to your hard drive.  And, here's something to be aware of.  Suppose you drag a folder containing numerous files from the hard drive to the flash drive, then later you add more files to that folder on your hard drive or update some of the existing files.  Then, to get the new and/or updated files copied over to the folder on your flash drive, you repeat the original dragging technique.  When Windows sees that some or all of the files you are copying to the folder on the flash drive already exist on the flash drive (i.e. files of the same name are already on it), Windows will pause and ask you whether you want to overwrite the existing file on the flash drive, and it will show you the date and time both files were created so that you can decide whether to overwrite or not.

Of course, you can elect to overwrite all files during the procedure.  However, if large files are involved, you might save some time by not overwriting where there has been no change in the file since that last copy.  And, the same works in the opposite direction, going from flash drive to hard drive, in case you happen to work from the flash drive at certain times rather than the hard drive.  It's a technique for synchronizing the two sets of files.

In win9x there is a folder named c:\windows\sendto. Open the folder and place a shortcut to the desired location. It will now appear in the Send To selection menu.

Sometimes shortcuts to drives can be a bit flakey. If you can access the drive from the shortcut in My Computer, copy and paste that shortcut into the Sendto folder.

I tried that but all it had was copy disc, when I selected that it would transfer info to my floppy or   burner.

Try giving it a higher letter designation and a Volume name...this should work.

Right click on it in My Computer and select Properties...

that was pretty vague and I did what you suggested.  found the mass storage device, but couldn't change the name, number nor nada except remove.

yes I did.  right clicked the comp icon on desktop, then properties, then, in the device manager found the storage device which got me to see usb disc.  clicked properties on that and didn't see any where to make changes.  unless there's some sort of control/alt/slam keyboard I should know about.

I appreciate your help.  I'll give the ol' POS a swift kick for you.  The drag over thing soybean told me does well for what I want to do.  I had a load of pics and the single file thing was getting old.  coulda took a while for 2 gigs worth.
