Is There A Standard Driver For USB Sticks?

Hey all.

My sister bought a USB stick which didn't come with a driver. The brand's MIKOMI. I've tried the usual search for the driver but had no luck. Their website is horrible!!

Anyway I was told that there might be a standard driver for basic USB sticks. Is this true?

Oh, she has Windows 98se as she only really uses MS Word. The stick is only 128mb in size. She has no connection to the internet so I'll have to bring the driver to her too!

A driver? I was unaware that a flash drive (stick) needed one. I have a 1GB drive from PNY and it needs no drivers. Which begs the question: Did something on the computer tell you that you do?

Well over the phone she told me that the usual "This device needs a driver" screen appeared.

I must reinstate that it is Windows 98, I believe this OS needs a driver whereas XP does not. (Although I might be wrong).

I see. What I don't see is a Mikomi web site. I see mikomi.com.au, I see mikomi.net, but none of these seem to sell flash drives. Are you sure that's the brand name? Is there anything else on the flash drive?

And yes, I see now that you use Win98; I'm not sure how, but I missed it in the first place.

I've not been home so I don't have much other information other than this was the Mikomi site I found (the flashes are under IT Products):

As I said I thought I might be able to install a different (similar) driver. I'm almost 100% certain that one doesn't exist for this product!

USB was relatively new when Win98 was released. Drivers for it are hard to come by indeed.
You can try another name brand driver for it an incorrect driver shouldn't wonk the machine.

She got hold of a few 'similar' drivers but none of those worked. After reading street1's link I'm pretty sure I'll have to enable USB in the BIOS.

If you can't resolve this for that MIKOMI flash drive, I can tell you that PNY has a driver for Win 98SE for their flash drives.  I know.  I have a PNY USB 2.0 Flash drive and I've used it with Win 98SE by installing the driver.  Here's a good deal on PNY Attaché 1GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive if you take advantage of the current rebate offer.

Edit: It's not a rebate, it's a special sale price now in effect.

Hey guys I got it sorted. I was directed here http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php (through Wiki  ). Once this driver was installed the device worked no problem.

Just thought I'd let you know incase the problem comes up again.

Trying to resurrect a couple of  win98se pc's which have lain idle for many years and which I'm having variable success.

On one, I'm trying to get the USB port(s) to read flash drives.  None have worked.  The smallest, 256Mb Mikomi, states no driver installed.
A search of the web is not finding much on older OS's, certainly on this subject.  This forum post is the best I've come across.

Firstly, the URL given above does not seem to exist anymore and is re-directed to another site which my pc stuff says is infected and refuses to load.

Can anyone provide a newer link or a file name/id for this issue?
