Have you tried the system restore feature that Windows XP offers.

Restore to an earlier time when the problem did not exist?

It appears as Dilbert pointed out,you have loose connections to the
drive,or the drive has gone bad.Unless dad ain't 'fessing up.

Usually when you enter setup when booting on a HP you will need to press
F1,or F2.This should appear on your screen when you are restarting your computer.....To enter setup F1,or F2.

If your drive is not being reported in the BIOS.....

It is either completely dead,or not getting a signal from the IDE port on
the mother board,or not plugged in properly,or your BIOS has gone
whacko.Does a led light- light up on your CD/DVD Rom drive?

Does your BIOS screen look like the below picture?

SWAG:Can you boot with your recovery disk?

It appears Your Cd-rom is bad or needs cleaned.
I don't put a lot of stock in cdrom cleaning disks you
can buy to clean the optical disk but, give it a try.

What model number of HP Pavillion do you have?
