Most websites w/passwords automatically close

I have HP Media Center PC w/ Windows XP/SP2, 2.0 GB RAM, 250 GB hard drive; IE 6.0.2900.2180.  Trend Micro Antivirus & Webroot Spy Sweeper; Windows Firewall


Almost every website that I try logging into w/ my password closes after giving this message: Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.  

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.

I have run PC Pitstop Optimize.  Nothing out of the ordinary there.  
I ran sfc /scannow (Start, Run) and it said “Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.  Insert your Windows XP Professional CD2 now.  However, I don’t think I have that.  The only ones I can find are Recovery Disks I made when I first got the computer.

I tried going back to an earlier restore point, but that didn't correct my problem.

Any help appreciated!

Had you been running any tweaking apps or D/L any updates ?
Perhaps you could clarify what you mean by [highlight]almost all [/highlight]....... Do you mean that some still work ok ?
What is the model number of your HP machine ?

I guess I was being cautious in saying that almost every website closes when I try to log in w/ my password.  Actually, all that I've tried since this [highlight]problem started a week ago [/highlight]have closed.  I'll try to buy something, get it into a shopping cart, but then when I try to checkout by providing the password, it shuts down.  Here's a list of sites that I've previously used successfully and now shut down:

My [highlight]model # of my HP is m7334n[/highlight].

I'm not real sure what tweaking apps are.  My computer is set to update automatically, so I don't know what's been updated in the last ten days or so.  Would going back to an earlier restore point take care of that?  Is there a way to see what's been recently updated? Your question did prompt me to remember that I had updated Adobe Reader to 7.0.9.  I went ahead and removed that, but it didn't cure my problem.

Obviously, you can logon to this forum.  You mentioned shopping cart.  Does the problem always happen when trying to logon to secure sites, where http has, or should, change to https?

Check your browser settings to make sure SSL is enabled.

In Control Panel, Internet Options, Internet Properties, I looked and "Use SSL 2.0" and "Use SSL 3.0" were both checked.   Does that mean the SSL is enabled or am I looking in the wrong place?

Regarding logging into this forum, I seem to be automatically logged in as the site recognizes me when I return and I don't have to enter a password.  I have had trouble even w/ sites requiring passwords where I wasn't using a shopping cart.

Yes, that means it's enabled.  

You might try using CCleaner and see whether it fixes this.  Run the Windows scan; I suggest you include all elements shown in CCleaner's panel (Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System) except Advanced; leave Advanced unselected.  Also run the Issues scan, backup your Registry when prompted, and remove the items it found.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I downloaded and then ran CCleaner.  The problem still persists, however.

   I've now upgraded to IE 7, but the problem still persists.

NEW INFO!  In trying to troubleshoot, I discovered that the websites that won't let me connect (and they automatically close) are the websites that use the same password as my Ebay account or my PayPal account.   Isn't that strange?? :-?

Can you logon to your ebay and paypal accounts?  On those website that you can't log into, do you get to a screen where you see an option to get help with a forgotten password?  Do any those sites have credit card or other sensitive personal information?

Yes, I can login to ebay and paypal.  Also, on the sites that were auto-closing on log-in, there was a place to check for forgotten passwords.  I even had a couple mail it to me to be sure I was using the right one there.

NEWSFLASH:   I've just solved the issue, I think.    I removed (thru add/remove programs) the Ebay toolbar and now I can log onto those sites I previously couldn't.  Thank you, one and all, for all your helpful suggestions and troubleshooting!

Stay away from toolbars...most are poorly written and contain all kinds of garbage.
