HDD noise

Can you tell by the noise a HDD generates if it is failing or still working properly?

What causes grumbling noise you sometimes hear when a HDD loads?

I have a perfectly functioning WD 8GB HDD and I can hear it reading and writing, even over the noise of the cooling fans.  The WD 80GB is virtually silent.  So you can't tell by the noise, unless it's loud enough to be heard in another room of the house.

Hard drives in general, actually. However, the older they get the more noisey them seem to be. Older technology or wear and tear?

Depends on the noise.  We've had some drives start making a ping-pong type noise intermittantly.  Soon after the noise started, we'd bluescreen.  Had to replace the drives.  I'm pretty sure it was the controller going south.
