Games freeze
« on: April 09, 2007, 04:38:00 PM »
Recently after a system restore, all my games freeze when they first startup. One game gets frozen at a black screen with the mouse always in the same place, and another game will freeze at the loading screen.

Any suggestions? Thanks :)

What point did you restore to? Did the restore modify the game files (eg: registry) or was the game recently installed? Have you done any updates? (specifically updating DirectX)

What OS?

I restored because i uninstalled my audio driver which was soundmax, and tried to install realtek. I was unable to install realtek, and it gave me a blue screen followed by a reboot. One game i installed right after i did the system restore. The other game i installed about 3 months ago. I do not know if the restore modified the registry. I haven't done any updates either.

I am running XP home.

Sounds like you are installing the incorrect drivers...

When i installed one game recently it updated direct x. I don't know if this has to do with my problem though.

Try uninstalling the driver, then restart your computer. Windows should redetect and reinstall. Never install drivers for hardware that you dont have. If you had a synaptstic sound card, dont install a realtec driver for it. Its not going to work. The device input outputs cannot be read like that.

I'm sorry for not knowing much about computers. But i am kind of losing myself in this topic. :-X I don't think the problem is with the audio driver because i did a system restore. But ever since the restore my games wouldn't play well. Therefor, i think the problem is not with direct x, but something the system restore did.

Individual applications set restore points in Microsoft Windows. Windows can also detect certain other changes and create points for you. These changes are backed up.
This, you already understand.

System Restore just brings them back to the point where you choose to restore.

Why did I say driver?
If you didnt restore early enough, then the driver may still be incorrect. In this case, uninstalling the driver would fix the problem since it would be redetected again.

Why did I say DirectX?
You recently installed a game, correct?
This upgraded the DirectX version.
If you restored again, the new version would be uninstalled, and it would render the game useless without the new version if the version it came with was required.

The game is made by the same company as another game. During the install of both, both upgraded or said something about how i might need to upgrade direct x. I installed one game awhile back and one recently. I am just going to uninstall the game i previously installed.

thanks

Ok
If that doesn't work, then you might want to try and run Windows Update to find out if there are any updates. The newest is DirectX 9.0c

EDIT: Unless you have Vista, then its version 10 I think

The games are Star Wars Battlefront II, and Rise of nations: thrones and patriots. The games are the actual discs. I also tried another game which freezes, and its called Tony hawks pro skater 4.
