Battlefield 2142
« on: April 14, 2007, 07:24:40 PM »
Alright, I finally gave in and got myself a copy of this game.  I didn't like it much at first (I've never been a fan of FPS), but now that my skills are improving, I'm starting to like it quite a bit.  The only problem is that being on dial-up, I can't really utilize the multiplayer feature properly.  Unfortunately, that's where a lot of the gameplay lies.  I had no idea there was no singleplayer campaign.  Anyway...I mostly play singleplayer mode, which is just fine and dandy, but I need a bit more variety.  I'm downloading some mods, but like I said, I'm on dial-up, so that's going to take quite awhile.

Multiplayer has some extra maps, so I'm wondering...is there a way to use those maps on singleplayer mode?  I'd love to play some of those maps without having to play on multiplayer.  How can I do this?  Will downloading the latest patch help?  It's going to take me a day or two to finish downloading it, so I thought I'd ask in the meantime.

Also...I decided to try multiplayer a few minutes ago, but there weren't any games being hosted.  I know this game is fairly popular right now, so that seems a bit odd to me.  What could be the cause of this?  Is it because I didn't install GameSpy?  If it makes any difference, I have the DVD version of BF2142.

One more question...do the different stats, points, ranks, etc. only save if you play multiplayer?  And why in the world do I have to connect to the server to play a singleplayer game?  Alright, alright, I'm done with all of my questions.  Any help/answers would be appreciated.

Dial-up?! HPB!

Feel free to be amazed by my stats: ViciousRaptor(Click) Notice the 3.13 K/D whilst even most top 10 players are struggling to get above 1.1.

It is true, sometimes I even amaze my humble self.

Battlefield 2142 is an online game, I don't know why they even bothered putting single player in as the bots are dumb and the only way they can win is by simply over running you. Much like the movie Aliens, except that you can see these guys coming from miles away.

Most mods are bound to be made for online gaming as well, but there's a mod out there that allows you to use all the unlocks in SP.

it takes quite a while to reload the entire list (Hench the use of filters) and it'll take ages on dial-up.

Because the game was made for online play, only when the servers are unavailable will you be able to play single player without connecting but when the servers are down, you won't be able to log in at all (lol)

You can't get rewards when you play single player.

There is no CD-ROM version of Battlefield, by the way.

Bottom line is that the requirements for Battlefield includes a broadband connection (I believe it says so on the box, too) so you're not going to be able to do much with that modem of yours. Perhaps if you have one of those fancy dual line modems you might be able to get a jolt of life out of it.

Being new to the game, the numbers are just mumbo jumbo to me right now, but kudos.

I agree, the bots are pretty dumb, but I've never been particularly good at first-person shooters (except for Call of Duty 2 on X-Box), so it works out.  Also, I'm playing with lower settings, so the bots can't be seen from as far away.

Oh.  A friend of mine said that his copy used a couple of CD's, so I figured there were two versions like Battlefield 2.  I really know nothing about these games.

Any idea what this mod is called?  And are custom maps generally only for multiplayer too, or can they also be played in singleplayer mode?

Well, I'm not really big on online playing anyway.  I do plan on taking it over to a friend's house and playing over there now and then, though, because he insists on it.  That'll have to do until I eventually get my own broadband connection.

I haven't seen one so far, but maybe he downloaded it from EA Link and wanted to give you an estimate.

Some German page containing some mod of dubious origin

Just a quick google, sorry no clue if it's trustworthy.

There are no custom maps for ranked servers, considering the fact that it would make the game unfair as only EA allows their content to be featured on ranked servers. However, there are unranked servers, perhaps they host mods.

By the way, I think you bought the wrong game if you want to play mods. Battlefield 2142 is a modified BF2, so most people who don't want to buy anymore EA BF games stick to BF2.

Mods of dubious origin are my favorite!

Playing mods isn't really a big deal for me.  I normally don't bother with them.  But I was hoping for a bit more variety for when I can't play multiplayer, so I thought I'd ask.

I'll look into that dubious mod a bit and see if I can find any information on it.  Thanks.

Well, I haven't tried the mod yet, but I finally got the patch downloaded/installed and I'm now allowed to see the server.  I tried multiplayer for a bit, and as I'm sure you know, it didn't quite work out.  But for the few minutes that I was able to play, I enjoyed myself.  I definitely need to get myself a broadband connection ASAP.

I tried adding you and Calum, but it was before I patched the game, so it most likely didn't work.  I'll give it another try next time I play.

The patch would have helped, it is by default set to search only for servers with the same patch level as you to avoid issues.
So when you have the latest patch, you can see more servers.
Get yourself broadband, this game is not intended for anyone using dial-up or even slow broadband (high latency connections, anyway).
By the way, off the subject, you're losing karma fast Raptor.
You were on 11 last time I looked, now you're at 6.
Someone, or several someones, do not like you.

The reason you can't see servers is because your connection is too slow to generate the server list. Like i said before, it takes at least 2-4 seconds to do it with a broadband connection, I can imagine it might take up to a full minute on a dial-up modem without proper filters in place..

I see the servers just fine now.  It only takes about 10-15 seconds to load them.  It just had to do with the patch, I'm sure.  I went ahead and installed GameSpy Comrade to see if it might help (I've always hated GameSpy, but this is kinda nifty) and when I tried using it to load the game, it told me that my version was older than that of the current server.  But since patching, there aren't any problems.  Except, of course, for the fact that I'm on dial-up.  I have no intention of playing multiplayer from home with my current connection, as it's completely pointless, and I'd hate to add any lag to the servers.  I was just curious and wanted to test it out for a few minutes.

Anyway...I've sent requests to both of you.  Looks like it worked for you, Raptor.  Not sure about Calum yet.

I haven't been on, you'll only see me on your list when I accept.
I'll be on later today and I'll accept.
Looking forward to seeing you on the game soon.
