I don't think that you are meant to download XP... unless you had a CD or something.

And what exactly does the black screen say?

How about posting the long and complete version of the story, including answering the questions above.

Does your computer meet the requirements for XP?

Minimum:
233 MHz CPU *
64 MB of RAM (may limit performance and some features) *
1.5 GB of available hard disk space *
Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Maximum:
1 Physical CPU (Multi-Core + Hyper-threading supported)
4 GB of RAM

4 GB of Virtual Memory
2 TB NTFS Partition (Basic Volume)
> 137 GB Hard Disks require SP1 or higher (48-bit LBA-compatible BIOS Required)

Recommended:
300 MHz CPU *
128 MB of RAM *
1.5 GB of available hard disk space *
Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter with at least 8 MB of video RAM and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Network adapter
Sound card and speakers
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

* Actual requirements will vary based on your system configuration and the applications and features you choose to install. Additional available hard disk space may be required if you are installing over a network.

Someone could have put XP up on the internet (LimeWire comes to mind), because it is quite old. Or he could have got it off a copied CD, which some people do (my friend has a copied Vista CD).

I agree with that; some people I know say that they downloaded it off a CD, which isn't really downloading it.

That seems to happen to many OPs, they create a topic, then don't respond or even look at the topic.

You mean newbies? OP's are the operators of the fourms (moderators, admin, etc)

Yep, that's what I meant. And most of the time, the OP isn't here (if they're newbies, they just post one then leave the site forever).

I think its that most people think this is like email.
Send it, get a reply, and your done.
Or maybe they dont know how to get back to their questions?

The OP could set the options for the topic so that they are emailled when a reply is posted, so that they would actually COME BACK and respond to the questions that they are asked.

    The question is: knowing how

A lot of people dont understand how the wonderful world of forums operates at all.
When I was ----- (thinking) 14 and signed up to this forum, it was the first ever forum I visited. (You see, it was only a few years before that that i discovered that processors could go faster than 900MHz)
I only joined because the first attempt at resolving my issue (which happened to be that the hard drive I was using just went bad. Thats what you get from using computers that go 4MHz with 80MB HDD from the late 80's) (It was a ComputerHope email. It got lost  :'( )
