cmos settings wrong

I'm fixing up a old gateway 2000 and when it starts it says
cmos settings wrong
cmos display type wrong

Run setup

then it asks to hit esc to resume but the keyboard doesnt respond and ive tried different keyboards.

First I would check what video adapters the case has.  Its possible there was an on board and also a second card installed.  If you are using one not the other and the BIOS is set to run with the other... it might explain 'csmos display type wrong'  I am not sure exactly how to get to the BIOS on a Gateway, but usually it is by pressing the delete key right after the 1st beep from the boot sequence(double check with gateway web site)
Then for "cmos settings wrong" could be refering to BIOS settings again possibly system date and time.  Try checking that out if the time date dont hold possibly the CMOS battery is dead.
Oh yeah make sure the keyboard is plugged into the right spot and not the mouse spot. Are the keyboards USB and not P/S2 that could cause a problem. ;)
