    Programs Not Responding
    « on: May 05, 2007, 02:30:30 AM »
    Hi Forum!
My computer repeatedly locks up, and I have to close out programs with the program manager. It says "program not responding". I have installed a new hard drive, and it runs better, but not much. Basically it starts doing this after running a while, then gets worse and worse. Could be a temperature issue? What can I do to verify this, and determine the cause? Dell Dimension 4700, Pentium 4
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Forums.
When you mean your computer 'locks up' do you mean it freezes?
Does this happen when you do a specific thing like open a certain program or something or does it do it no matter what?
    What OS are you using?
    Did you install anything recently?
    When did this start happening?
    How old is your computer?
    and (finally)
does it happen all at the same time

Answer those and post back, then we'll have an idea what we're dealing with  ;).

      Hi Carbon Dudeoxide!
Thanks for the response! Yes, it freezes.
It does it no matter what; usually only when on the web.
I have tried two different web browsers, have installed a new hard drive and reloaded all of the software, have run virus scans and spyware scans, and have followed all suggestions from my ISP (Netscape).
      It is Windows XP
Can't remember anything that triggered it.
      Computer is three years old
It happens gradually; getting worse as my session goes on.

      Have a good day!
      Thanks again

You bought a new HDD and you reinstalled Windows XP? Did it happen immediately after you reinstalled? assuming you went on your merry way to install SP2, anti-virus etc.

      If so, I'd diagnose RAM.

What kind of PSU is installed?

        Hi Raptor,

Not sure what PSU. I guess whatever Dell normally uses.
It has lots of RAM for running a memory intense flight simulator.
        How could I confirm this?

        Thank you!

        RAM can be diagnosed by downloading and using the following software;
        Windows Memory Diagnostic

As for the PSU, how much wattage? And what kind of hardware is installed?

          Hi Raptor,

I downloaded the Windows Memory Diagnostic (thank you!), but it need to boot from a floppy, or CD. I do not have a floppy drive. Is there a way to make XP home edition boot from a CD?

          Thanks again!

You make the BIOS boot from CD-ROM, so yes, there is always a way on modern machines. You can create a disk image with that program you downloaded for memory diagnostics, just burn the ISO to disk using Alcohol 120% or Nero.

            Hi Raptor,
Yes, I was able to burn a CD, but I now cannot get the computer to boot from it. How do I get into BIOS and what instructions do I write where? The instructions for the Windows Memory Diagnostic were written in 2003. I have Windows XP Home Edition SP2, a Dell Dimension 47-00 1,024MB Physical Memory, 534MB Available, 2GB Virtual Memory.
            Thank you very much!!
            Best regards,
            Mike

              Hi Zylstra!
I downloaded it to C:, then loaded it to Sonic Record Now, and burned it.
              Thanks!

You have to burn it as an ISO, not just burn a copy of the file that is named xxx.ISO

Download InfraRecorder to burn your ISO
              http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/?page_id=5

The following instructions are from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
              n Windows 95 / 98 / ME / 2000 / XP / Server 2003 / Vista

                 1.

Download and install [WWW] Infra Recorder, a free and open source image burning program.
                 2.

Insert a blank CD in the drive and select Do nothing or Cancel if an autorun dialog pops up.
                 3.

Open Infra Recorder, and select the 'Actions' menu, then 'Burn image'.

              4.

Select the image file, then click 'Open'.
              5.

              In the dialog, click 'OK'.

An ISO file ends in.ISO. The file you describe is an executable file (.EXE) If you double click on it, it should start, or at least start to unpack if it is on a hard drive.
