Before doing anything else, I'd like to see what happens when you try repairing/reinstalling IE6.  If that doesn't work, then it would be a good idea to try out another browser.

You will eventually want to update your Windows, however, for security reasons.  Let's just hope we can get your problem fixed before taking those steps.  I think there's a chance that updating could fix your IE6 problem, but I would like to try everything else first.  We'll keep this one on the backburner for the time being.

this has not fixed the problem... so sorry... do you think I should try the different browser now??

Hi there, long time no see.  Firefox is definitely worth a shot.  However, I think you may have to bite the bullet and just try installing SP2.  After backing up your important data, of course.

hi Chris, yes been a while thanks for again helping. I have downloaded Firefox and I can again open links extra. I will back up and install the SP2..... hopefully that will fix all problems.. I will let you know... YOU ARE A STAR!!!!!!!!! cant believe what I have learnt from u and the help that you have given :) cant say thanks enough.....Computer is running so much better and now I actually have anti-virus ...(a real one) thanks..chat soon.....
