What's it worth?
« on: July 05, 2007, 06:42:49 PM »
A friend has a computer to sell, and asked me to have a look at it.   I saw it earlier today.

I said that I thought I might be able to get some good advice as to what it is worth -  so here we go:

Dell Dimension L1000R

Intel Pentium III   1 G
128M ram
Intell 82810E graphics controller
17 inch Dell monitor   E770S
Creative Sound Blaster   PCI
LiteOn CD-ROM 48x
floppy drive
Dell kb
Conexant PCI 56K modem
20G Seagate hard drive   model # ST 320413A

Video is integrated in mb

Two USB ports on the back, none on the front.
In Device Manager, does not say "enhanced".  Are they 1.1?

2 memory slots on the mb.  One empty, one in use now.
No AGP slots.
4  PCI slots -  2 in use now.

Power suppy -  Dell model 5141 3D    145 watt

Sticker on bottom of case says manufacture date = 060101
This jives with a copy of the original invoice, dated 6/1/2001

Invoice says it has 128M of SDRAM  -  I didn't remove the one ram stick to examine it, and I'm not current enough to be able to identify its type just by looking at it.
Looked around Dell's site and can't find this model number.   Heck,  I even found 486s listed, but I can't find this one.    Looked in manual and drivers.
If anybody can tell me the trick to finding it there,   I would appreciate it.

Invoice also says Intel 3D AGP graphics Factory Install -   I'm baffled on this one -  I didn't see an AGP slot in my quick look inside,  and it looked like the video out was coming straight off the mb -  it was under the power supply and hard to see.
Any comments on this?

The person that ordered is still around, and does not believe there have been any hardware modifications inside the case.

It came with speakers, but they are in use elsewhere now -  will not go with it.

CDs and software:
Dell Drivers & Utilites   -  mentions modem on label
Dell Dimension Resource CD - Drivers, diagnostics, utils
Reinstallation CD -  WMe
Applications -  Backup: Dell installed programs

Most likely, this is all the software and CDs that came with it.

Case is kind of small.
There is no extra external bay available.
It has been quite a while since I built anything,  but the mb looks small to me too.   I don't know the correct terminology... sorry.
What is this type of mb?

No NIC on the mb.

Answers to the questions above will be appreciated.

I fired it up.   It booted right up.   Seemed normal to me.

So -   what do you think it is worth?    ( U.S. )
and,  besides asking your input,   where else would be good to get information on its value?

What diagnostics would you run on it?     ... any other tests that come to mind?

So far,  I've heard them mention a hundred dollars for it.    I indicated that I doubted it was worth that much.

Thanks for your time and input.

I think dl65 hit the nail on the head.

    $50.00

That's about what I was thinking -  but,  I'm not 'with it' as I haven't been in the market for anything in a long time -   so I have nothing to base that number on.   Pretty much just a gut feeling.    So thank you both for your comment.

Just logged in today.     I was expecting a bunch of comments.   :(

By the way,   and I should have emphasized this in my first post,   -  this is not just the box.    It includes the 17 inch monitor.
Did you intend for it to be included in that $50 estimate?       ( I did )

Heck,  I wouldn't mind having the monitor myself....  hmm...  I wonder what it is worth by itself...

There was some talk of donating it to a church or something.    The computer does not belong to my friend -  it belongs to my friend's employer.
Since it is a small business,  they are thinking that they can write it off if donated to a charity.
Sadly,   they might get more dollar benefit from it if they give it away!    I guess they could claim it for something well over $50.

Any additional,  or new comments?      from anybody?

Also,  any advice on where else to look for info to help get a feel for its value?
I tried eBay -  found only one, and it wasn't really a good comparision.

    Thanks

For a computer that's running a P3 processor and has only 128MB RAM, etc., etc...and is 6 years old...you won't be getting too much.

Top dollar you might get if everything is included as far as monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers...is more realistically going to be in the $100 - $150 (USD) price range.

I build and sell them all the time...so when someone comes to me with one of these to upgrade...I usually point them to a new one.  They're better off.

Actually, they may be able to get more for it as a write-off if they donate it, however, the'll have to use the depreciated value for tax purposes.  It depends on how much they paid for it.

    Dream on!

Slow cpu. Tiny RAM. Tiny HDD. USB 1.1. 145W PSU. 6 years old.

    $50 MAX.

Where I live (UK) there is a scheme called Freecycle where people give away stuff they don't need any more. I have seen PCs with more RAM, faster CPUs and bigger HDDS being GIVEN away. If you tried to sell such a machine via a small ad in a newspaper, you very likely would get no replies even at £25 ($50).

I hate to tell you this, but I've taken computers, just like the one WillyW has mentioned here and sold them for the price I quoted...and not by conning anyone.

It depends on who you're selling it to...you have to target the buyer.

Do they have the money for a new one?  Are they buying this just for a backup?  There's a lot of things to take into consideration when selling a machine like this one.

While you might think he can't get $100 - $150...sorry, but I beg to differ...and we're all entitled to our opinions.

    Willy W...

If it is clean and operates efficiently...I'd target the seller and ask what I stated before...

The market for that type of PC is limited...but it is doable.  It really depends on what the seller is looking for...most of the time it's the best deal he can get.  He can always start high and drop his price, but it's definitely worth more than $50.

Does anyone have any comment about how to find this computer on Dell's site?

Any comment on the video being AGP yet integrated?   I thought AGP was a type of slot....

Any comment on the type of mb?

You can find downloads and documentation if you have the Service Tag...it's normally on the outside of the tower or you can find it through System Information.

Since it's 6 years old...you won't find any pricing info there, though.

I'm totally agreeing with all the post from different prospectives.
50.00 to 150.00 according to who and their needs.

Somewhere out there near you is a youth.Probably, closer than you
think. They may actually dream of having such a fine thing but,the
finances in their world don't allow for it.

Hook up with someone like that and give it to them..Now, that is
    priceless.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, just wanted to add my opinion.
Personally, I'd pay around £30 or so for that system, which is roughly $60.
No more though, although that's just me.
It's worth trying to find someone in need of it, say an older person or a family who need a second or third computer for a younger child.
    Here's something though - I'm looking into buying a PC, with 1200MHz Athlon CPU, 640Mb RAM, 20Gb HDD, Win2k, 18" monitor, Canon printer, and keyboard/mouse, for £50 ($100).
Not sure if that helps at all.

    Sorry to resurrect this thread,

Don't be.   :)       As of yesterday, my friend had not gotten rid of it.   The place of business is open for another week or so -  so any posts till then are good.

    Yes,  it does.

For what it is worth,   I advised to set it up where people could see it at their place of business.
Turn it on,  set the screen saver to   " For sale  $75 or best offer"   and let it run all day.
    See what happens this week.
