IE6 & firefox not working, computer connected to internet
« on: August 23, 2007, 07:17:08 PM »
My granddaughters compact presario lap top, will not open sites in ie6 or firefox. It shows that it is connected via an Intel Pro wireless 2200BG adapter and can download some updates of other programs. It is running xp home Edition w/sp2. I have ran avast, ad-aware, cyberdefender, and regestry mechanic but no help. Here is an ipconfig file that I ran the other day.

I forgot to say that I went into internet options and reset to default level, security-privacy and advanced. Connections is set to never dial and lan settings set to auto detect. In network connections the wireless connection say's connected and firewalled ( i tried the firewall disabled) and I disabled both the 1394 and dialup connections.

I think I'd try disabling CyberDefender and see if that makes a difference.

hmmm....it seems like you've chosen to manually input your ip adress.

go to network connections > local area network > properties > scroll down to TCP/IP > properties > and choose to automatically detect ip address.

I had a few min.s so I checked the tcp/ip properties and it is set to obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically

is it only ie7 and firefox which can't browse webpages?

if it is, then i guess we can determine that it's due to browser settings.

      if it's not...then.

I'll see what i can think of.

I think that I may have another problem, tonight I tried to run avast & adaware while in safe mode and the computer shut down several times. Both run fine in regular windows. Should I take this safe mode problem to another forum or could this be related to my browser problem. Thanks

it shouldn't be related to your browser, however there still is a possiblity.

i'd still like an answer to my previous question.

is it only your ie7 and firefox which can't browse webpages?

Actually I only have IE6 and firefox for browsers and I cant get on the net with either. Every so often a page will load (rarely) with no pixs  but if you click on a link it goes back to"The page cannot be displayed" screen. Also auto-updates are loading but if I try to update from the program it will not connect. Hope this helps. Would it help if I get opera and try it.

I downloaded and installed IE7 Still shows the cannot display screen. Just before I installed ie7, avast updated new definitions. The connection works but not the browsers. I am ready for the next procedure. Thanks for the help!

                try what Joemama recommended.

                But....

if THAT doesn't work, then it could be that there's a missing file or reg. entry, possibly removed by accident or a program (registry cleaner maybe).

now, you can always do a system restore, to restore those files and reg. entries.

OR if you're system restore doesn't work or is turned off, you can re-install windows COMPLETELY, and that MAY help. but only do that as a last resort!!

Finally, it could be that your ip adress is malfunctioning.

if your desk top computer (if you have one) is expierencing the same problem, it is more likely that this is so. You can always contact you ISP and ask them to give you a new ip adress.  ;)

I downloaded IEFIX and tried to run it. It said that IE7 is not currently supported.
I guess that I am going to have to re-install windows, If I can get the disk from my grand-daughter. Just for info, yesterday when I opened IE the page loaded (very slow)but with half of the Pix's. Tonight when I opened MSN the whole site opened (again very slow). But when I clicked on a link I got the "cannot display the webpage". It seems that I am getting close, just no teddy bear. By the way My desktop and Laptop are working fine and when my other grand-duaghter uses her laptop on my wireless it works also. Thanks for all the help.

try your ISP. if they can't determine the problem, then...back up your data, take one last look at your system, reboot pc, install windows. *sad song plays in background*

You can always try reinitializing the hard drive, partition and format it...making sure your XP media is clean and then try the reinstall.

Reinitializing the hard drive basically writes zeros to each sector of the hard drive...

This process is almost like you going out and buying a new hard drive...all you have to do is prepare it for the installation of your operating system.

It would help if I knew the manufacturer and model of your hard drive...this way I could steer you in the right direction, so you can obtain the correct diagnostic software to perform the above process to ready the hard drive.

                    I'll wait for a response...

Thank you for the response. I cant tell you the hard drive without taking the drive out. After trying several times to reinstall the computer is letting me format the hard drive. this may take some time and I have to get up at 4am to go to work tomorrow, so I will have to continue this tomorrow night. I will let you know how this works. Hopefuly this will let me make a clean install. Thanks again.

I reformated the hard drive (seagate momentus 5400.2) tried to install windows and about half way the computer shut down. now every time I try to install windows the computer shuts down at various stages. I was hoping that re-installing windows would do the trick but I cant even do that now. all sugestions would be appreciated.

Are you sure your CPU isn't overheating?  Have you looked at the inside of your computer...dust build-up around the vents and the CPU and power supply fans?  Blow the dust out with compressed air...not a vacuum cleaner.  Be careful of ESD...

                    Keep us posted...

This is a laptop compact presario v2000. It just shut down again and I checked the hard drive and CPU and neither were hot. Is the fan supposed to run all the time or is it on a thermostat. I was watching and did not see it spinning. I did not have the problem of shutingdown until recently. It could be a new problem not caused by the other problems I was having. When it rains it pour's.

If the computer is shutting down during the reinstallation of your OS, then either the computer is overheating...there's a hardware failure (possibly HD related)...

You also mentioned the computer isn't hot, but you also stated the fan isn't running either...if it's not...then you may be experiencing an over heating issue.

Thanks for the info. I am taking the computer apart now to see what I can find. Thanks again. Wooa! I just remembered that I bought a service contract on this computer so I guess I will take it to them. Thank's to everyone that helped. You are a great group of people.

                      Thanks for the kind words...

It's funny when you mention forgotten service contracts...happens to the best of us...

At least you found out before you opened the thing up... ;D
