I am responsible for 60 Work PC's but only upgraded at home from a PII350
10GB HDD, 192 RAM,  W98 SE.  last month when after 9 years faithful service  the mobo went to silicon heaven.

I didn't upgrade till then because the computer could do everything i needed it to.

I buy new stuff when i need to not when the marketing men wave shiney stuff before me.

Your feeling of "need" makes me think that you don't understand the principal of the digital realm, and that is "want". I want a better PC so that I can run more programs. I want a better PC so that I can watch better quality movies. I WANT a PC because I NEED it to play my games.

      But that's not the problem.
If you have a PIII and you still use it, that's fine.
But when you have the hubris to come to me and and tell me that your PIII doesn't work well anymore, that's when I draw the line.
The lesson here should be that if you want your PC to work well, you can't buy one every 10 years and think that you can still use it and fix it after 8 years have passed.

You're absolutely right Jess607, it is your choice whether you want to help someone or not. The people who have tried to help casse2go have chosen to do so because they don't believe it's a waste of time.
It is on the other hand a waste of time is when you choose to fill up a thread with your childish nonsense. Stop it, it isn't welcome here.

Based on this thread, I don't think there is anyone here at CH who deserves your brand of "help".

          Don't be like that.
I only wish to make the case against those who waste our valuable time by not listening when we tell them that their PC is simply too old.

How others choose to waste their time is their choice.

You chose to have your valuable time wasted by joining the thread.

"Your feeling of "need" makes me think that you don't understand the principal of the digital realm, and that is "want". "

That kind of evocative response makes me think you need to spend slightly less time in the "digital realm"

I choose not to waste anymore of my precious time time replying to your posts.

Wow! Get online with a Microsoft Tech and you miss everything. First of all I appreciate all of you die-hard Computer technicians who love trying to help someone with a computer problem. Believe it or not Jess, that's what I am. And I don't think it matters to a real computer tech lover if the computer is 30 years old or just rolled of the line yesterday.

I have a computer that throws me offline when I play games and I posted in this computer help site because I felt someone in here might have had the same problem or was learened enough to give me a possible cause for my problem.

Now Jess, if you don't want to post to my thread with a helpful suggestion, that's fine. Perhaps my computer is so much of a challenge to you that you can't deal with the possibility of not coming up with the answer. And that's fine some people are cowered by things they can't figure out. But that doesn't mean someone else can't tell me what the problem is.  I guess you'll never be in the antiques business or in restoring old cars.

Anyway, thank you all who have supported my efforts to keep my computer running. My "EasyAssist Pal" and my comp repairman taliked today and agreed I needed to contact my dial-up carrier. My repaiman still says my hardware is fine, my Pal says my drives are updated, yet I still get the disconnects. I still feel that something is missing from this computer since it was reformated, but as I never knew what was on it before, I can't imagine what it is.

The tech also said that Office not being on here wouldn't be a cause. Although, I forgot that the repairman told me I needed it for the saves in the emulators, or something like that. I can't save the games. It's been a long day guys. Verizon will dispatch a repairman next week to replace my phone jack. Though I can't believe the problem is that.

Thanks again everyone...even you Jess. Your comments are taken to heart. BTW, I'm not o old man. I'm an old woman. Well, oldish.
If you say, "I can", you're right. If you say, "I can't", you're also right.

Of course it does. Because the fact that it's 30 years old is what's CAUSING the problems.
I love old PCs, but when you go and say "my 30 year-old PC doesn't work well", what am I supposed to say exactly?

I guess you'll never be in the antiques business or in restoring old cars.

But don't you see the difference?
When you restore an old car, you leave it in your garage for show. Or when you buy a really old coin, if you collect those kinds of things, you don't go to a soda machine and actually use it, do you?

I have a computer that throws me offline when I play games and I posted in this computer help site because I felt someone in here might have had the same problem or was learened enough to give me a possible cause for my problem.

And my only case in point here, is that if you didn't have a 10 year-old PC with an 8 year-old internet connection, you wouldn't be having this kind of problem.
No, I'm not necessarily saying that because your PC is old, it's giving you problems. But that if you bought a new one every once in a while, you could make sure that you never do.

Haha. You obviously don't understand the mind of a PC enthusiest. Whenever I find something that I don't understand, I'm ecstatic.

Anyway, thank you all who have supported my efforts to keep my computer running. My "EasyAssist Pal" and my comp repairman taliked today and agreed I needed to contact my dial-up carrier. And all this work is costing you how much? Over a 100$ probably.
You could have used that money to buy a new PC. And you should REALLY move to DSL/Cable.

Thanks again everyone...even you Jess. Your comments are taken to heart. BTW, I'm not o old man. I'm an old woman. Well, oldish.

                    You're a girl?
Well, in a weird way that depletes all my resentment towards you (not that I have that much to begin with, mind you).

Well, all in all, I hope you buy a new PC because that will make YOU the happiest.

                    Supposed to say?    "supposed"??
Why ever would you assume that you are supposed to say anything at all?

But if you are so motivated, then the answer to your question is:
Something friendly, courteous, respectful, and helpful.

If, on the other hand, you can't do that,  -  and you feel the urge to say something snide, ignorant, petulant, childish, and useless  -    then don't say anything at all.
                    Try it sometime.

                      Wow.
Talk about someone not taking their own advice.

And mind you, I DID say something friendly, curtious and respectful. I humbly suggested that she get a new PC.
And since I don't think you even know what the rest of those words mean in context to this discussion, you really SHOULD take your own advice.

I had an 8 year old laptop for a couple of years, and was needing a new one. But I had to wait because I couldn't afford it. I had to use my family's computer to watch videos and stuff, but I could survive. I finally was able to get a new laptop, and am really happy.

My point? It is not absolutely necessary to get a new comptuer if you have a working one, especially if you don't have the money! You can survive without it....

Not much point in having a cutting edge computer for internet use when you're limited to dialup.
