LAN line showing up on modem with one computer, but not the other?
    « on: September 07, 2007, 02:31:43 PM »
    Hello,
Ok, So my one computer is doing something wierd when i try to set up the internet. On my moden the LAN Line isn't lighting up, so when i try to set it up it tells me that it's encoutered an error. What's especially odd about it is that when i do the same procedure with any other computer it lights up and works fine. I don't know very much about networking at all, so this might be really easy, it may not.
    Any ideas?

Does that computer have the same OS as the other ones? Remember, too much info is better than not enough!

I just don't know what all to post for a networking problem, they're all the same OS though. The one that's not working was installed with the same CD used on my main even

no light could be a bad cable, bad port on the router or bad nic card in the pc. What does device manager show for your nic card?

The other computers, connected through the same cable, to the same port on router?
As Lerninmore said, it could be a fault in one of several places: bad port on router, bad nic in pc.

Show us here what is the result from the command (you have to type it in command prompt):
          ipconfig /all >c:\outipcfg.txt

(after you launch the command, copy the content of c:\outipcfg.txt here)

Well i'll work on trying a different cable, i've don't have any extras so i have to go through the process of taking one already in use. Trying to make the cords look neat really makes it difficult to switch them.
I also thought about a bad router, i've had some problems with it before. So, when i tried to install the internet i hooked my computer directly to the modem, didn't go through the router, pulled the power on the modem for 30 secs and tried to install. Right now i do have it hooked up to the router though, since it didn't install.
In device manager the nic card it just says it's working properly under status,
Here's that txt doc from command prompt:

Bad physical address. Have you change it or it became so? How it reached that address, 00-00-00? This is not valid, and there are a few possibilities:
              - you changed it on Windows
              - faulty network adapter

IP Routing  Enabled...... Yes - your computer is used as a ICS computer, right?

This is the response you got from the computer having trouble to connect to internet? I would check with a different network card. Yours actual seems to have defects. It does not have a valid MAC address (physical address) and ussually this is a sign of a malfunctioning network card.

Oops, i made a really dumb mistake, I did that test on the wrong computer   :P
It still lets me know that my ethernet on this computer is defective, it would explain a couple things.
but i'll do the test on the right computer in a sec here and post it for you

OK, on the correct computer for ipconfig/all it just said "Windows IP configuration", and for 'c:\outipcfg.txt it said "'c:\outipcfg.txt' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
Also, incase you want to know my Network Adapter it says i have a 1394 Net Adapter from Microsoft

That would be your problem then, the 1394 adapter is a firewire adapter not a network adapter. (The reason it is showing in your Network connections is because you can connect two computers using a firewire cable for some very fast file transferring.)

Have you installed or removed anything recently?

I thought we were getting somewhere with Deerpark's post, any more thoughts on it?

Also, in network connections it says "1394 connection" connected at 400Mbps, only, once again, i can't actually get the internet up, and my interent cd says an error occurs while installing.

Have you installed the network adapter's drivers? What network adapter card do you have? Integrated on your computer's motherboard? What type of motherboard?

                            Well i thought i installed the drivers, it's a Shuttle FS51 v2, i went to, http://eu.shuttle.com/archive/en/ss51g_faq.htm, and i installed

AGP driver for all operating systems (6118kB)
                            VGA SIS Driver v2.07 for Win2000/XP (17144kB)
LAN Driver for all operating systems (SS51G/FS51, 2585kB)
                            USB2.0 Driver for 2000/XP (7147kB)
Audio Driver Realtek/Avance Logic ALC650 Download Page
VGA AGP Driver for SiS651 Chipset

Then i had to install something from another site because one of the links didn't work i forget what it was, but i think it had something to do with video.
These are all from the top of the page SS51G v1.0.
i tried SS51G v2.0, but they didn't seem to work, and the top ones did.
Perhaps should i try the bottom ones again? and actually my whole comp is a little messed, so which ones should i be downloading from that site to make sure i do it right??

Finally yeah, i'm just using the network adapter that's built in

It depends, you say it's a FS51 version 2, but you installed drivers for version 1. So, for version 2, the drivers and other necessary downloads are:

                              winflash
bios update (only one from the two - I would sugest winflash version)
                              agp driver
                              vga driver
                              audio driver
                              usb driver
                              usb patch
                              network driver package
                              (eventually the manual)
