Windows 98 Drivers for HP PSC 500 Printer / Scanner
« on: September 18, 2007, 05:21:39 PM »
Hi, I've just been given a HP PSC 500 Printer, which seems to be in absolutely first class order! I went to the HP site to download a driver for this that will work with Windows 98 (my old but trusty operating system!) to find that these were now not supported (from July of this year).

Has anyone any idea where else I could get a download from, or where I could borrow / purchase a cd from with these drivers on?

The PSC means Print, Scan and Copy and therefore I'm guessing I need both printer drivers and scanner drivers to make the thing work fully.

Thanks

John

Check:

and
http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/211358/hp-psc-500-500xi-all-in-one-driver-1.0-for-windows-95-98-me-free-download.html
and

Note that I am not vouching for any of these,  -  I found them with Google.
If you'd like to double check,  put     HP PSC 500 driver         in Google's search box.

Let us know what you find, and if it works.    Some other (like me) Windows98 user might come along reading here someday and benefit from your results.

This is very interesting.
Like I assume the original poster did,   I had a look at:
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/wwwelcome.html
and I put          HP PSC 500 Printer driver    in the search box at the top right.
That took me to:
http://search.hp.com/query.html?lang=en&submit.x=5&submit.y=6&qt=HP+PSC+500+Printer+driver&la=en&cc=us
where I clicked on       Software & driver downloads    and went to:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=58710&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us
and I see:
Driver Downloads and Replacement Driver CDs no longer offered for Win 98 & Win ME               and clicked on it.
Now, at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01080344&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=58710&lang=en
it says,

"Replacement Driver CDs Are No Longer Available for Windows 98, 98 SE, and Me

As of July 2007, HP will no longer be able to offer driver downloads or replacement driver CD ordering for Windows 98, 98 Second Edition (SE), or Windows Millennium (Me) for your HP printer, all-in-one, camera, or scanner. Microsoft has stopped providing and supporting certain files related specifically to Windows 98 SE, and this change affects all technology companies. HP, along with other technology companies, is no longer able to use selected components in support of Windows 98SE, which has an impact on our software strategy for Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, and Windows Me. HP will continue to provide other selected HP software and applications that do not depend on Windows 98 SE components for the foreseeable future.
Although the drivers for Windows 98, 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me will no longer be supported by HP, your HP product will still work with these operating systems with the software provided to you on the CD that shipped with the product. Also, if you have previously received a software CD that lists any of these operating systems on the CD label, or downloaded a driver for one of these operating systems, please maintain these files. These files will no longer be available in the HP online support Web site or in any other HP support options (such as e-mail, chat or phone support) after the date mentioned above.
NOTE:    This information supersedes any statements in the printed documentation, the online Help and also other documents available in the HP support website.  "

This certainly seems to jive with what kentjohn said.

I don't know about him,  but when I read that I didn't look around that site anymore.
Apparently you did.    :)

How'd you find that file?

Thanks to you guys, I've succesfully downloaded the driver.......and it works! It's a *censored* of a big file for a driver, so my dial up connection took forever, but success.

Hopefully others will be helped where to look in future.

Thanks for the welcome messages - I'm sure I'll be back!

Here

Isn't that hilarious?    That's almost the same words I used when I searched.
I haven't been back to try my search again,  to see if it does find the same thing you found or not.   It probably does.
Apparently, I clicked a few other things, and simply didn't click that one.

Isn't it odd that the HP site explicitly says that the driver is no longer there,  yet it is?

Thanks for the reply.
