XP Problem
« on: September 29, 2007, 08:27:08 PM »
I dont really know how to explain this, but i have an problem with XP that is effecting a number of things. For example, if i open the Search function from the start bar, nothing in the panel on the left in displayed (apart from the dog). Similarly, if i open User Accounts from the Control Panel, nothing is displayed either. No text, no images, nothing. In Internet Explorer, the yellow infobar never appears, and it will not let me install Flash for it, however, Firefox will, and Windows Media Player will not open. I feel the same problem is effecting all these things, but i dont know what controls them so I cant find a fix to repair it. Any suggestions?  ???

I am running XP Home SP2 by the way.

any spyware protection?
I suggest you use avira

update and run full scan
and S&D,

I'll give it a try. I'm currently using Avast, and i have Ad-aware.
So you think it's a virus problem and not missing system files or something?

Its very possible it is a virus or worm. Avast is a good antivirus program. Have you tried running the "reboot av scan" or whatever its called?

in all honesty, if it is a virus/worm and its already done this, the damage isnt repairable (to my knowledge) besides an OS Reload/reformat. If you find a virus and it fixes it or deletes it, do an os reload. Otherwise, i think you're stuck with reformating your system.

Few things to note.

Did you notice these changes after downloading/installing a driver, warez, or using p2p? Any files your friends have sent you that didnt work or programs you have downloaded than never ran. Looked at pron lately ;) ?

Are the problems happening one by one or all at once and is there a growing number of similar problems?

Also a thing to note... Are you using any custom theme such as the program Windblinds or something like the Windows XP conversion to Vista theme. These often cause these sort of problems.

I ran S&D and let avast scan the computer, a few things were found and deleted but the problem is still there. I'll try the reboot av scan you were talking about.

Im not sure when the changes occured. The problems are on an old laptop which was my partners, and has not been used for about a year and half untill now. There were numerous problems when i got it up and running again, all of which i have fixed, apart from this one.

Im not using any custom themes either.

It really feels more like the system has some missing dll files or somthing that controls XPs function to display whats missing. This is only on Microsoft software by the way - the XP windows, IE, WMP etc. Other programs like Firefox run fine.

Oh and by the way, before i fixed alot of the problems, when i tried to install IE7, i used to get an error message saying that the Crpytographic service was not enabled. I looked for it in the services list but couldnt even see it. I never enabled it but after fixing alot of other problems, IE7 installed fine. Could this still be a problem as to why things are not showing up? Even the configuration settings page that you get when you frst open IE7 will not appear correctly; it's just blue and blank.

Specifically what issues did you resolve , and how did you resolve them?

Please tell us what issues you are dealing with right now .

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

Well the main issue was that ownership of the hdd was not correct because i had previously connected the hdd to my pc to backup lots of files, because the charger of the laptop was broken. I had to chang the ownership of the folders on the hdd since it would not let me access them. I finally gained ownership back to the user on the laptop, but it took a while mind you because this XP is in Spanish (partner is from Spain).

Anyway, that was the main problem, because no programs or anything could read/access the files they needed. Now thats solved, everything is working fine, apart from this, which is why i think something is missing.

The only issue i am dealing with now is the one in the first post.

It's possible you actually don't have full ownership of files and folders...

Im on Xp Home, so i had to go into safe mode, right click on My comp>properties>security tab. Cant remember exactly from here, but something like clicking on advanced properties on my user, checking a box to replace access rights to that user and clicked apply. It then took a fair while, going through all the files, changing their ownership.

I followed the instructions from Microsoft. Why?

    Just checking.
Do you have an XP Home CD ? ?
If so go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...it will ask for the CD.
Let it run to completion without interruptions.

SFC is system file checker. running it will repair all damaged Windows files.

Just to let you know, I've fixed the problem. I found this thread about WMP not opening,

    http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index.cfm?action=showthread&threadid=299792&forumid=1

and followed the 3rd post by The Raven. WMP now opens and it also fixed the other problems i mentioned like the search funtion and IE.

    Thanks for all your help.
