windows 98 start up problems...
« on: November 04, 2007, 06:51:06 PM »
cannot get windows to start...says the VMM32.vxd is missing...windows can't start without it...I can't even get it to start in SAFE mode either...did a scanreg and picked an older registry that worked at the time...picked it and it still did not help...does anybody have any clues to this problem...the computer is my older one, an HP Pavilion.
would appreciate any suggestions...I must have screwed it up royally somehow...last time I had it running right must have been in 2006 or maybe 2005???

Why are you still using Windows 98?

You must have your w98 CD and the product key. If there is no valuable data on it, a format and reinstallation is the best way to go. If there is any data you want to keep, there are other ways. The reason for reinstalling is that VMM32.vxd is a file created by windows during installation. It is a compiled file consisting of many .vxd's.

no I never had a windows 98 CD...the only thing that came with it was a system / application recovery CD's...the system does not recognize that I have a cdrom either...so anything that requires the CDrom to install something won't help me...the
best I can do is work in DOS...which is not much.

I would start checking with friends/co-workers etc. to see if anyone has a CD you could borrow. The repairs needed will require a CD as 2KD suggested.
There is a non-destructive re-install method for Win98 if yoj have basic DOS skills...

even if I could find a 98CD, I could not install it as my system doesn't "see" the cdrom
on my computer...and yes I have basic DOS skills...sure would be great if I could do a fix through DOS...cause thats all I get when I start it up.

There is still a way. Concentrate on finding a CD...
