Problem playing video files(recurring errors >.>)
« on: October 07, 2007, 09:03:51 PM »
I was told to post my hijack this log in this section of the forums, so here it is, along with my message from the original post.. thankies!

I keep getting errors whenever I try to play any video in any player I've installed on my computer. From BS Player to M player to VLC, they all spout the message:

"X has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience."

It started off with Windows explorer doing this to me(after browsing through media usually), and now, though it still does, so do all my video files. It's killing me! I'm missing out on all my favorite shows! heh, any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated. Even if its just giving me a media player that works.

I'm running a copy of Windows XP, I have Avast running all the time. I have integrated audio and visual as far as I know. Usually when I get a problem with my computer, I just run Kill disk and reinstall Windows, but now I'm kinda.. I like my computer Cry

Thank you,
Alan "Xero" C

Download, and install Spybot, if you don't have it installed (http://www.safer-networking.org/)
Close all windows.
Start HijackThis
Select\check the following entries, Double-check to make sure that only these entries are checked:

- R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0A94B116-4504-4e26-AB05-E61E474AA38B} - C:\Program Files\AskPBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A9SRCHAS.DLL
(this is AskJeeves Toolbar, some treat it as a spyware, you decide after reading here: http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/installations/askjeeves-banner/

- O2 - BHO: ohb - {5ED7D3DE-6DBE-4516-8712-01B1B64B7057} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\UpMedia\ContentTool.dll

- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
(If you use on-board Realtek AC97 audio device, leave it alone, otherwise, fix it)

Click on "Fix it" button, and restart in Safe Mode (F8)

Open Spybot. Update it. Fix whatever it asks you to fix.

Turn off System Restore.

Restart in Normal Mode.

Turn on System Restore.

Post new HJT log.

Good luck.

Another entry you should fix...

O4 - Global Startup: Reset.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\repair\reset.bat

As for AlcxMonitor, I usually think it's best to remove it.  It's nothing important and you don't need it for your audio to work.  It collects data without your knowledge, so many people consider it to be spyware.  However, it isn't malicious or harmful, so you're not in danger if you keep it.

Your log looks clean to me now.  Are you still experiencing problems?  If so...have you tried installing new codecs?  And out of curiosity...did you do anything before your problem started?

I didn't think it was any malicious things or anything... but w/e. I can't really remember when exactly the problem started, but it started first with BS player and windows Explorer, both spouting out the "X has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience." message. Since that first time, I started using VLC, which worked fine, and then WHAM, no media Player worked after that...

I can't play media in Safe Mode either.

I'll play around with other media files in a bit to see if its just AVI or what though >.>

I can't say how well it might work, but there are plenty of free codec packs available (such as AVI Codec Pack Plus).  It would be worth a shot to try one out and see what happens.

I haven't tried putting on Codecs, but I was thinking about that for the last two days, lmao... I've been so busy, I was just too.. busy/lazy. Though that Windows Explorer erroring out all the time.. not a clue why, but thanks for the Codec suggestion, It should fix my problem. I'll repost once I try it!
