How to disable smart tags in IE?
    « on: October 09, 2007, 02:29:52 PM »
    Hi,

I was just reading an article on IE that is causing me problems. Yes i do use Mozilla but IE is still taking over my drives. There are 2 suggestions. 1.) Remove smart tags from IE which was on the article in Add/Remove programs but didn't see smart smart tags or 2.) Disable smart tags from tools Internet Options there was no at all smart tags box to uncheck. I did have IE 6 on my PC but i upgraded to IE 7. I had too try to fix the problem. If it wasn't so difficult to remove IE from Windows it would of been bye bye now. But it is still in my PC. Yes i did uncheck IE from Control Panel then Components. Guess what? It is still in my system. How do i remove it from the registry and the brain of the PC? We must fix the error that is "IE encoutered a problem and must close". I have to fix it. I can not access my drives to watch or play the movies i encoded. I hope someone replies back to this ASAP. Thank you.

    In what way?

    We must fix the error

The easiest way to fix IE, is to reset it to its original state:
    Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Advanced Tab and click on Reset… button

Nope it still won't work. I clicked restore defaults. When i go to one of my drives in My Computer i get a message saying IE has encountered a problem and must close.

Hmm it sounds strange that you're getting an IE error when accessing "my computer"... Are you sure it isn't explorer.exe that has encountered a problem?

Could you perhaps take a screenshot of the error you're getting?

I did not have a reset. I only have restore default. How do i make a screenshot? What is the best freeware tool to make it without it's being so huge to upload?

I use ScreenHunter (http://wisdom-soft.com/products/screenhunter.htm). It has a free version, which works perfectly fine.

How do i use ScreenHunter? What format should i save it as? Remember i can't save my image where the default is or i would encounter a problem. I have to put it on my desktop.

In SceerHunter you setup a hotkey (you can accept default). I have set it up to ALT+F11. When I press those two keys, it opens a crosshair on your screen. Point your mouse to where you want to start capture, click, hold your mouse button, and drag to wherever you want to stop. Release your mouse button, and you are done. A screenshot will be saved to a place of your choice. By default, it's saved in ".gif" format.

But, it would be nice to solve your basic problem.
Just curious. Download HijackThis from here: http://majorgeeks.com/Trend_Micro_HijackThis_d5554.html, and post its log at "Computer Viruses and Spyware".

That sounds really confusing with ScreenHunter. It's way above my level but i go get HijackThis.

                No prob.
Let's go back to your IE.
Go back to Internet settings. You have IE 7, as I do, and you have to have "Reset" button there, or...eh, you look too young to be going blind, already...LOL

This particular IE error message is by far the most hated error to me (one of many reasons, I don't use IE), but anyway...
                  Try this:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Advanced tab, click to select the Disable Script Debugging check box in the Browsing section.
Click OK, and then restart Windows.
