As for BB speed, there is really nice, free program (some of you probably know it) called TCPOptimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php). It really works. You can get probably 20% better speed when you allow it to make changes to your settings.
It's pretty straightforward...
I already have it about as fast as my dialup will go. :\  You have no idea how much tweaks I've made and how much internet accelerators I've used.

Contrex isn't VirginMedia offering a blistering wireless connection for Business users in that area ? ?
I seem to remember reading an article on that not too long ago...
If so what are the gritty details ? ?

Everyone knows your pain. We all started with dial-up some years ago. My first modem (1993) was just 14.4k, so you can imagine. Then I "improved" to 33.3k, then 56k.
Few years later (1998), I've heard, cable service (@Home) was coming to my area, when I saw it at my client house (he was one of the first people to get it), I was just shocked.
I couldn't wait to get it.
At the beginning, it was little bit painful, because they had a lot of downtimes, but I didn't care. It was just SOMETHING ELSE!!!

Dial up seems even slower to me than it really is because I use to have dsl which had a few hundred kb per second during downloads. Unfortunitly then I was to young to fully use it and now that I am old and smart enough to fully use it I'm stuck with dial up.

I hadn't heard of one, I do know they are offering a free wireless router to new 4 mbit and 20 mbit domestic customers in their cable areas.

Believe me, you really don't need to pay big bucks for it.
Those SOBs ISPs cap your broadband.
With my cable, I use have 3-4MBps (max).
After some router tricks, my download speed jumped up to 15-18MBps (I posted a screenshot above with 27MBps, but it was surely extraordinary...just to make some jealous...LOL).
I don't want to post any solutions in the open, but if you have a router, and you search fro "port forwarding", you are gonna be all set.

I think you are thinking of some DSL services. The British Virginmedia cable service gives you the speed it says on the can. They do "traffic management" between 4 PM and midnight - if I download more than 3.30 GB between 4 PM and midnight my 20 Mbit speed is cut to 5 Mbit for 2 hours. Apart from that, nothing to  restrict me. No need for illegal tricks. No downloaded data quantity caps at all. That's why I bought a 360 GB hard drive for £59.99 from Maplin, and why I'm wishing I'd spent the extra tenner for the 500 GB one.

No, I'm talking about cable ISPs, but I'm in US, and they all do capping.

There is nothing illegal in my tricks. I'm just exercising my options, my ISP won't tell me about, because, especially here in US, everyone wants money, but when it comes to proper service....that's another story.

Surely, first result, I posted at the beginning of this thread was extraordinary, but I did more, so on average, it looks like this:
