C Drive
« on: December 01, 2007, 12:19:59 PM »
When I try to open my c drive I get asked what program I would like to use to open the file. What would cause this and how do I fix it?
TY for any help offered

Right click your C: drive icon...

Is there an 'Autorun' command there? *(don't click it)

Have you got anti-virus enabled? Have you fully scanned lately or detected any infections?

Also, download HijackThis and post its report here after scanning.

Right click there is an Auto not autorun. I have AVG anti-virus and it scanned this morning detecting a virus and moving it to the vault.

I figured so. First of all, open your C: drive (right click, Open).

Scan through the files and see if there is a file called Autorun.inf. If so, right click -> open. Copy and paste the contents here (that will let us know what file it is trying to open).

After copying and pasting, delete the Autorun.inf, that should return your Drive C opening to normal. We'll deal with whatever else comes after that.

I still advise that you post a HijackThis log as well.

-=EDIT=-
Are you using Vista or XP?

Also, check your AVG log and see what the name of the virus it found this morning was.

Moderators: Could you move this thread to Computer Viruses and Spyware please? It looks like that's what we're dealing with.

Yeah, you'll have to post the HijackThis log a section at a time.

Can you be more specific on the PSW virus? (ex. PSW.generic.AOG, PSW.onlinegames.QRL, etc.) There are many variants. The removal of each differs from the others.

You have an infection that likely will include multiple steps to cure.

Go to This Thread and follow the directions. Add the requested logs as attachments. Adding attachments instructions are included.

Also uninstall the copy of HijackThis you are using and download the new version which is included in the thread.

Download Hoster (do not run it yet)

Please also download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. ATF Cleaner.exe This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program. (do not run it yet)

--------------------

Please copy this page to Notepad and save it to your desktop. (or print it out)
You will be in safe mode and not able to see this page to finish the instructions.

--------------------

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
