Ms-Dos error message "∑"

I am trying to fix my friend's laptop. The problem started with it booting immediately to a black screen that said "NTLDR missing, press ctrl alt del to restart", so after a lot of messing around I came to new problem. Now, when I turn the computer on it goes directly to a black screen with this symbol "∑" in the upper left-hand corner. I've Googled it and looked a million other sites and have not seen the problem present itself.  Any ideas on what the problem is and how to go about solving it?

We need a lot more info in order to even start guessing at the problem.
Tell us about the computer that's having problems. Specs, when did the original problem start, etc. Also how did you fix the "NTLDR missing" problem?
