Video and audio card slow in gaming
    « on: December 29, 2007, 10:05:15 AM »
    OK,

I hope this is where this goes.

    My son is really "into" gaming and with my oversight I have allowed him to "get into the game". BUT, I am trying to figure out;

    A. What type of video and audio card we have, so we can purchase appropriate games.

    B. Why the audio is delayed.  That is the way it is for all the games.

    C. Why Video and audio is slow on many things, but not others.
Slow on Games and You Tube - But NOT on local news videos, and not on DVDs or home videos.

What I have done so far:

I moved all files and photos to a brand new external hard drive and I then took my computer to be "cleaned" and reinstalled,. BUT the audio is still delayed.

Here is the information about my computer:

Purchased in 2003. Yes I know it is old, and that may be the issue. But, before I go out and get another computer, I want to see if there is anything I can do.

    HP - Pavilion
    Intel Pentium
    4 CPU 2.40 GHz
2.39 GHz, 504 MB of RAM
    7.4 GB of disk space

The computer came with a basic set up that included works and other basic programs, but I am now running Windows XP.

Well, I hope I followed all the rules.

So, what does a Mom do? :-) And how can I help my son have more fun in his fun? (and my fun too!)

PS: If his grades drop - this will not be an issue. :-)

I read the thread for "liambiscuit" and tried all he is doing,

.......I just tried downloading Everest 2.20 and it didn't download for me.
I am not sure what I did wrong, but I must not have downloaded it correctly.

When I click on that link ---

this is what is on the bottom...

"Limitations: Lavalys has discontinued the free edition. This is unsupported. "

So, I went the actual Software website and I still could not download it. When I did try to download it, I tried opening the folder and I received a warning that it was an empty folder. <<sigh>>

Ignore that warning and download the free version anyway.
You download it by selecting one of the download sites at the top of the page.

I went to the Lavalys website and this is what I found.....

          "Lavalys leaves freeware development
          Press Release | 2005-12-05
Lavalys announced today that it leaves the freeware market by halting the development of its EVEREST Home Edition (the successor of AIDA32) system diagnosis product."

                DARN IT!

Ok it downloaded fine. The Icon was loaded on my desktop. I clicked on the Icon - it asked If I wanted to run it, I said yes. Then it said

"the setup files are corrupted, please obtain anew copy of program."

Just curious - I was posting here when it was downloading - could that have corrupted the download?

I went to Control Panel to see programs downloaded and Everest was not there. So I did not have to remove it.

It shouldn't matter but you never know. Try downloading it again.

                    OK I tried it again.

I even tried it from one of the other links under.....

                    "Free download from"

                    And it is still corrupted.

                    What do I do now?

If you have a good setup on your computer, is it possible to email me a copy of the good program? <<<keeping in mind I don't know much about
                    e-mailing programs - this may be a dumb suggestion>>>

OK for all other NOVICES this is what I was doing compared to what I should have been doing....

From the "Geek" link I was selecting "save" on computer right away -
                      That was not working...

I tried and tried different ways to do it and then "BAM"

I then selected "run" from  the link, and then the computer did the rest to ask me all the quesitons about saving to the computer! YEAH it worked!!!

OK now I am going to do some learning real quick and we will see what we have. I am excited. This is fun. :-)

HA!!!! Yeah, here is my computer!

The only thing I deleted was the computer name. Someone told me once that it could be used to get into my computer - I don't know if that is true or not - BUT I could always add it back in if it is needed.

Problem   Disk free space is only 5% on drive D:.

                        What is the D Drive?

I thought the most important thing is the C drive.

As you can tell I have only 202 MB of free space on the D drive and Even I know that if the D drive is important then this is a BIG problem!

But would this also slow down the audio?

OK I serached the "D drive" it is full of GSC files. I have no idea what those are.

                        With games, this:
                        - Video Adapter   Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller (64 MB)
                        is your main culprit.
You'll need to buy real video card. Your video, is just on-board video chip with 64MB of RAM. Today's games need more RAM.
You can get decent video card with 512MB of RAM for...~$100.

                        Also:
                        - System Memory   503 MB  (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)
It won't hurt to get another 512MB/1GB of RAM

Problem   Disk free space is only 5% on drive D:.
