Old Games / New Computer ???
    « on: December 31, 2007, 09:44:23 AM »
    OK..

I know this is going to sound VERY old to some people, but I love my MYST trilogy. It doesn't work very well now that I have XP. I use to run it on 95.

I used to play it all the time, then for a few years I put it on the bookshelve and now I would like to play it again.

    BUT...time has been my enemy.

I really want to play it on my newer computer.

BUT I have a few options...

I could set up an old computer to play it, but I really don't want to do that just for one game.

I guess I could just forget that game and find another one...but I am the type I would really like to finish it, before I go on to something else.

Other than those two things, I have no idea what to do.

Are there any "fixes" to make old games run on newer OS?

After installing the program locate the .exe file that launches the game. Create a Desktop shortcut.
    Power down and re.boot.
Right clik the new Desktop shortcut and delect Properties.
You will then be able to set it to run in compatibility mode.
It may take some tweaking to get the video etc. correct.
Good Luck and let us know...

      Is that Delect? Or delete?

Just out of curiosity, is there a new Myst on the Market for new computers? I would not waste the money if I can fix the one I have, but if I can't, it would be nice to finsh the game I started so many years ago.

First let me say --- I am an amature by every since of the word, so take what I say with a little thought first.

BUT... the reason I am here is because of Resident Evil and some other games for my son.

Broni and others suggested that I upgrade my RAM and video card. I have just ordered these items and they are not here yet. BUT, I feel confident that this will fix my original problem.

Also, the first thing anyone will ask you to do is download Everest from a certain link. I will tell you that I messed it up a few times, so feel free to read my whole thread on my computer games issues here, and you will also find how to download everest and the you should not make the same mistakes I did.

Hang on I am going to get the thread link now.

Here it is. It is long but it is a quick read. Be sure to follow the Everest instructions and post your information like I did. Then everyone can help you greatly.

Be sure ot read at least the first 11 posts before downloading Everest - that way you cna avoid the 30 minutes of mistakes I made. NOT saying you would make those mistakes - but the first eleven posts are a quick read, so you can either avoid a mistake or you can laugh at mine. :-)  :P

I didn't see it mentioned, but there is also Uru: Ages Beyond Myst.

Myst V was really good. I liked it.

There are even more offsprings...Same Wikipedia link:

          # Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, and its expansion packs, Uru: To D'ni and Uru: The Path of the Shell, hybrid single-player games set in the modern day Myst universe. They were later released in a single compilation called Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles.
          # Uru Live, a version of the Uru games resembling a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG). After a short-lived online beta, it went live, but was cancelled shortly after. It was brought back in a limited capacity under the name Untěl Uru. It was released as Myst Online: Uru Live on February 15, 2007 by Gametap, and is currently available in 14 countries worldwide.

Myst Masterpiece Edition was an official product. It was a re-release designed to work properly in XP, but still using the same old graphics and interface. Still has issues with graphic cards that can't display 640x480.

realMyst is a clone of some sort. I never got into it and don't know much about it.

Uru and the expansions all failed miserably. The advertised Uru Live that came as part of the retail version was a huge disappointment. Yeah, I got it a month after it came out and Uru Live had already been shut down.

This is so cool!  I am excited to find all my games, and look for the new ones out. I am psyched!

I used to love MYST! I LOVE any puzzle games.

I love any games that involve "finding" stuff.

I have surprised many people when I say stuff like "why don't you go here or try this"... and they say "oh that could not be there or that won't work"...then low and behold it does!!!

On a game about 25 years ago  - the games were very basic then  - (I can't remember the name of the game) I suggested to a guy he jump in the moat around a castle - he told me that the character could not do that.

I took over and walked slowly around the whole moat. In one VERY small spot the character could jump in and swim, and I found a key hanging under the bridge. :-) HEE HEE

I have been HOOKED on those type of games ever since.
