Cannot connect to internet via dsl
« on: January 01, 2008, 05:45:34 PM »
I have Windows XP, Verizon broadband via AOL.  I am using a Netgear router.  I have 2 direct connected computers (Compaq) and one wireless laptop.  All my computers were connected and working fine.  Now one of the direct connected computers will not recognize my DSL.  I have bypassed the router and connected directly to the DSL box and still no recognition.  I have ever done a recovery starting from scratch, still no connection.

Is there some type of hardware in the computer that I could replace.  I have tried everything else.

Does your Device Manager show a Network adapter?  And, does Device Manager report it as working properly?

Yes, it says it has a network adaptor and it says it is working properly.

Please copy and paste the output of the command "ipconfig /all" from a command prompt.

What's that physical address? You set it?

DNS server address is 192.168.1.1? On the working computer is the same? (In your network there are addresses like 192.168.0.x)

The ipconfig /all command - SPACE means the space key, ENTER means the Enter key on the keyboard:
ipconfig SPACE /all SPACE c:\cfg.txt ENTER
Now you will find in cfg.txt all those informations and you can copy/paste from c:\cfg.txt here, in one of your posts.

If you ping 192.168.1.1, what response do you receive?

I did not put in the physical address.  There is one on my working computer as well, but it is not the same.  The DNS server number is the same number on my working computer.  When I ping the 192.168.1.1 on the computer that does not work, it says request timed out.

Here is the ipconfig /all info, I have also added the ipconfig /all c:\cfg.txt, but the cfg appears not to work.  It says it does not recognize.

One thousand apologies. I forgot the redirection sign.

rtowns, please put here that ipconfig /all information for both computers: the working computer and the not-working computer. And specify which is connected directly to the modem and which is connected through switch. When you are connected directly through modem you are using the right physical address? Because some ISPs memorize one MAC address (physical) and only the computer which uses that MAC is able to connect.

After you create that file, c:\cfg.txt, paste it's contents here. Last time it was correct, but you didn't paste here the information obtained on the working computer.

Both computers are hooked up to a Netgear Router.  I have no idea which physical address is being used or should be used when connected directly.  Nor do I know how to change it.  One day it worked fine the next it didn't.  The only thing done in between was setting up a share network.

The working computer is as follows:
