Microsoft Word 2003 - The text is encoded/encrypted
« on: January 12, 2008, 04:59:16 AM »
I'm at university at the moment and I'm trying to open some seminar notes and practice exams from the uni-webpage.

When I try to open it, Microsoft Word 2003 shows it in encoded/encrypted text. I've installed the Microsoft Compatibility
Pack but that hasn't made any difference.

This is what the text looks like:

ࡱ                >                       D           j          A   B   C   y        @=   a? J l    ߭
4j          s     f 6.    x]{p ?ܼHBr?K.!ᑀ? ^E :Ǥ  @<

I can't revise or do my work, please help me. Thanks.

The original file is a *.DOC file? Or a *.DOCX file?

Are you trying to open it directly from the webpage or are you saving it to your computer first?

There's a chance the file might also be corrupt.

Provide as much information as you can.

I've tried to save the file then open it, and also to open it directly from the website but it's always encrypted. It isn't just one file, it's about 30 or so.

Sorry I'm not that smart with PCs.

A few are .doc files but the majority are .ppt. Are the .ppt ones powerpoint files? Because it's trying to open the files in Word :s

But yeah, a few are .doc. None are .docx

If the *.ppt files are trying to open in Word, that would be part of the problem. Do you also have Powerpoint? If so, right click one of the PPT file, select "Open with...", select Power Point from the list, and check "Always use the selected program..." then click ok.

Have you tried opening a DOC file yet? Are they doing the same thing?

On a side note, could you edit your first post and remove all the ""s from it. Without a line break it's making the page display weird.

Ah I see. Yes I do have Powerpoint but it's not in the list. I clicked on browse but I can't find it. It's definately in my Start->All Programmes->Microsoft Office->Powerpoint (Vista).

I tried opening the .doc files but it does the same thing. I don't understand why. This is quite a new laptop, and it's been like this since the start.

Sorry, I'll edit 1st post.

Follow the instructions here for the file association problem then.

Still looking to see why your DOC files might be having a problem.

That's wierd. The *.doc files are working properly now too. No more encoding.

Thanks very much for your time and help :D :D
Much appreciated

Method 1: Repair Office or the Office program

I couldn't do the 2nd, and didn't need to I guess.

Thanks again
