Passing a file name to a variable in DOS

I ma creating a batch file that needs to retrieve a file name and pass it to a command using a variable. For the life of me i can't seem to figure out how to do this.

Can anybody assist???

    how are you retrieving the file name?
    you can use set to assign the variable.
