error c000021a, Windows XP does not load
« on: January 14, 2008, 03:23:07 AM »
Hello,
I'm running a Vaio Notebook with Windows XP home.

After un-installing some progams (T-online, Router-application) and automatic Windows update, windows did not start anymore, and I got a bluescreen with error c000021a. Windows did not start in any configuration (last know to work, safe mode) so I tried booting knoppix to save my files, but after starting to boot it froze.
Repairing windows with an extra XP home CD seemed to work, but on rebooting after installation I got a different bluescreen.

I booted with Ultimate Boot CD and copied my files to a usb stick using Volkov commander, but some of the copied files do not match the original (especially jpg).

Does anybody have another idea, how I could save my files?
thanks

    Refer to patio's comment here...

You'll need another computer with an IDE connector.

Also since this is a critical Windows error DLoad the diagnostics for that laptop HDD from the drive manuf. site and run them on it when you connect it to the other machine...
    It may be failing.
The 2 other most common causes of this error are bad RAM and/or power issues, but let's check the drive first.

The file transfer with the IDE adapter worked. Antivir, Spybot and chkdsk found nothing on the harddrive, so I restored the drive using the recovery utility.

So far the notebook is working again. Thanks to everybody.
