What file format are these pictures?  Are you using Outlook Express to receive your email?  Can you save the attached files to a folder outside of Outlook Express?

I just sent a test message, with a photo (jpg file) attached, from Outlook Express to my Gmail account.  I then logged on to my Gmail account using Firefox and downloaded, i.e. directly opened, the photo with Paint.  So, try that.
