    Connecting two computers to internet
    « on: March 14, 2008, 06:10:11 PM »
I have two computers that I am trying to connect to the internet.  I have cable internet, so the internet connection runs through the modem.  Because I want to connect both using the ethernet, I went and bought a Dynex 5 port 10/100 ethernet switch.  I connected everything and I got a connection on my Sony, however I couldn't get anything on my Dell.  After trying for a while to fix it, I just connected the Dell straight to the modem (like I usually would), and now I do not get any connection at all.  My Sony works fine connected to the modem, so I know that is not the problem.  I have no idea what to do.  Please help.

You haven't really posted enough information here to say anything conclusive but I'm guessing the problem is you need a router instead of switch to get both of the computers online at the same time.
But before you run out and buy a router could you post the make and model of your modem?

Okay it seems the Arris TM502G is a modem only and not a modem/router combo.
So you will most likely need a router in order to share your internet connection.
If you want to be absolutely sure before buying yet another piece of gear you should call your ISP and ask them if a router is need for you to have more than one computer online.

I agree with Deerpark...you need a router.  What troubles me is when you connected the Dell directly to the modem it didn't work like your Sony did.

Did you reboot the Dell after connecting it direct?

ahousholder, u should call ur ISP and ask about a new modem that is a router then u can connect both of ur comps to the net.
