window xp crashed what can I do to fix it.

  my computer once it is turned on it goes into telling me to select a mode...I select the safe mode and it goes into the windows but it stops and goes back and forth....it doesn't let me do a system recovery.....what can I do?  Please help...I don't want to take it to a shop...that will be my last step....I have been told it will cost me 200 to put a new hard drive the windows back in.

i had this exact problem - and in the end i needed a new harddrive...
