    Help!

    I can't download anything.

I tried to update Java, and the download begins, then reaches anywhere from 1% to 11%, and just stops.

I downloaded silverlight from microsoft, but only after "cancelling" the download and restarting it several times after numerous similar freeze-ups (it seemed to "remember" after the cancellation somehow).

Disabling my Norton AntiVirus did not solve the problem.

I have windows XP (sp2) and the problem occurs with IE7 and firefox.

What else, beside Java, did you try to download? What type of connection is it?

      I can't download anything.
Even small files, such as TweakUI

I don't know what that file is, so I'm not sure I want to try to download it.

The 1606 error message says this:  Error 1606.  Could not access network location http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/GetFile/1.6.0_-5b13/windows-i586/ja1600000.cab.

It lists 1606 as a common error, but their solution is to save the installer to my computer and install offline, which I then can't do.

TweakUI is a well-know Power Toys tool for Windows XP, and download.com is a reliable source.  So, you have nothing to worry about.  You don't need to install it, just  see if you can download it.

ok.  I'm trying a system restore to an earlier time right now to see if that helps, so i'm on a different computer.

tweakui downloaded and installed iself, but I don't know if i want or need it on my computer.

So i guess a small file was ok.

system restore did not solve the problem

No harm done.  If you want to uninstall it, go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and remove it.

BTW, you should be able to download it without installing it.  Just chose to Save it, not Run it, when you download.

This exercise proved my point, that you can download some files.  This may be an issue to raise with your ISP.  You might also do some more testing.  Visit download.com and try a larger file.

              I will.

But there seems to be something systemically wrong.  I did a system restore, and even after there are formerly-accepted websites that are crashing the browser.

Like the NY Times crossword page, for example.  There's no reason why IE7 should close when that page tries to open.  There is no IE7 error message, either.

I went to download.com and tried to download errorsmart.

No luck -- same deal.  The download begins and then just stops.  This should not be happeneing after I have now restored my system twice to a point three weeks ago.

I can't find errorsmart on download.com.  How large a file is it?

Your problem with the crossword puzzle seems to be a Java issue.  You still have not resolved that, right?  I believe the puzzle requires Java to be installed.

I visited this Java testing site: http://www.javatester.org/version.html  With IE7, I got a message that this add-in was disabled.  I then opened a panel by clicking on a popup box as prompted by IE, enabled Java Runtime ..., and then IE displayed a report confirming I have installed Java is 1.6.0_05.  I visited the same site with Firefox and got confirmation that Java is working in Firefox.

BTW, you're paid subscriber to NY Times on the Internet, right?  I don't see a way to test the crossword puzzle without being a paid subscriber.

Does Firefox do very same thing? Did you try to uninstall IE7?
