Router Issues

Hi, quite an odd problem, and i'm a novice so bare with me.

I recently bought a Belkin G Plus MIMO Router, the problem was that I used to get disconnected from Windows Live Messenger and some websites, game etc. randomly, the connection would drop for long enough for me to get disconnected then it would pick back up again.

I called up Belkin support line, and the guy set some channels and stuff. He asked me to wire my system up and leave out the router, I did and my broadband wouldn't connect at all.

The weird thing is if I configure my router to a 'Static IP' I never get disconnected, until a few weeks in, when the router totally crashes and I have to reset it!

Weird :S? Anyone got any ideas? Is it faulty?

You may have a problem with your modem, rather.

    I believe some ISP providers track the MAC address of the computer or router/switch they're connected to.  If you switch out the box, you either have to clone the old MAC address or call them to record your new one.  However, I don't  have a ready reference for this opinion.

      Unless you're paying the ISP for a "static" IP Address, they may change it at any time.  Start a log file of your internet address recording the IP address, date, and time when checked.  Perhaps you'll be able to correlate your "crashes" with the changes.

      Easy way to retrieve current internet address is to access http://www.whatismyip.com/

        No broni, dahlarbear is right. Maybe the ISP equipment memorizes the MAC address of the computer/router connected to it, and for another computer/router to work you need to clone the MAC address or restart the ISP equipment.

        Your both right! Some ISP do it one way and than some do it the other way.

        What ISP do you have?

        And what plan did you sign up with?
