    Internet Connection Failure?
    « on: May 04, 2008, 11:06:13 AM »
Hi. I currently have a Compaq Presario V6000 running Vista, and it used to work wonderfully, but lately, the internet connection has been weird.

    SCENARIO:

    Internet works.
I turn it off and go to sleep.

    -- next day~

    I turn it on.
    Internet doesn't work.

    Restart.

    Internet doesn't work.

    Five restarts later~~~
    Internet works!

Is there any reason why that could be so? Thanks!
Sorry if I'm unclear or confusing in any way.

What kind of internet connection do you use?  Dial up / DSL / ISDN / cable?

Is there a router between the computer and the cable modem, or do you connect directly to the cable modem?

Have you rebooted the router or cable modem, lately?

Yes, there is a router between the computer and the cablem modem.

        I haven't rebooted anything lately.

The funny thing is that the internet works perfectly fine on my sister's computer, just not on mine.

My apologies -- I believe you did mention that.

Is your connection to the router wired or wireless.  If it's wired, I'm gonna suggest you try a new ethernet cable.  It might also be your etherenet card, or the drivers that run the card.  The drivers may need updating.

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
        Power them back on.
        Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

        If that doesn't work...
        Go Start>Run, type in:
        cmd
        Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
        ipconfig /flushdns
        ipconfig /registerdns
        ipconfig /release
        ipconfig /renew

        Restart computer.

        If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run LSP-Fix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Restart computer, and see, if it helped.
        If not...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
        Restart computer, and check again.

Thank you Aegis and Broni . This forum is super awesome.
<3 Your replies were so quick, too! :D

          Aegis:
It is connected wirelessly, and I do update my drivers, so I
was sure it wasn't the cause.

          Broni:
My laptop worked after doing that Command Prompt method.
          Sometimes I feel like such a noob. -__-;

I thought it wasn't going to work, though, because it kept on
saying something about elevation(?), up until ipconfig /renew.

          Thanks again! ^__^;

Upon updating my HP Driver, I have found the internet to not work, yet again.
            Why does this problem persist? My sister keeps telling me I ruined it. -__-;

Try to hardwire it straight to the modem, and see if the problem persist.
It may be either router, or network card problem.

When I hardwire it straight to the modem, the internet works, but the little light thing on my laptop is still red/orange when it should be blue, and if I disconnect the connection, the internet stops working.

I don't believe it's the router because my sister's computer works fine.

And if it was the network card causing the problem, how would I go about fixing it?

You didn't ruin anything.  So, the built in wireless card won't connect.  Let's see...
can you go into Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and tell us what kind of Ethernet connections it lists?

I'd go to library, Starbucks, or a friend's house, and see, if you can connect from there. If so, router is bad.
If not, we'll go from there.

First, we need to know, if router is OK. If it is, then we'll have to deal with network card.
                BTW...
NVIDIA GeForce is your video card
                Broadcom is your router
NVIDIA nForce is your network card.

If this is the thing to look at, then both are supposedly okay.
How can it be the router, though, if I'm the only one having
difficulty connecting with the internet? It's strange that it just
stopped working one day and whatnot.

                    I guess it's the network card~

Oh... reformat's the one where you wipe out everything, essentially, right?

What should happen if Windows fails to reinstall NVIDIA nForce?

You may, as well, BUT before you do that, download fresh driver from nVidia site.

So I downloaded, uninstalled, installed, and it works.
That's what I was supposed to do, right?

I hope it doesn't work temporarily, and then not, like last time...

                                      Anyways, thanks. :D

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
                                        Power them back on.
                                        Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

                                        If that doesn't work...
                                        Go Start>Run, type in:
                                        cmd
                                        Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
                                        ipconfig /flushdns
                                        ipconfig /registerdns
                                        ipconfig /release
                                        ipconfig /renew

                                        Restart computer.

                                        If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run LSP-Fix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Restart computer, and see, if it helped.
                                        If not...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
                                        Restart computer, and check again.

I found these directions on this forum and was wondering if anyone can tell me if it would work for Windows XP - our computer will connect to the internet but most of the time within 10 -15 minutes we get disconnected and may or may not get it to reconnect right away.
