    Selling My PC...
    « on: May 12, 2008, 09:16:55 PM »
I am trying to sell a computer of mine, but i'm not exactly sure of all the steps I need to take before I do so. I know more about the hardware aspects of a PC, so I thought I would ask around and get some info from people with experience. I know I need to completely wipe the hard drive to erase anything personal on it. But, I want to keep the O.S., a game I have installed, and the anti-virus/spyware program on it. What is the best way to do all of this? Do I just completely wipe the HDD, and then reinstall everything? Or is there an easier way to do these things? Thanks in advance.

I would say to format and reinstall the stuff you want on it. Than sell it.

legally, you have to remove the OS unless you are passing on the licence & original install media, and since non-corporate licences are for one machine at a time that means uninstalling it from any other machine you may own. Likewise any software.

So does this mean that if dont have the software installed on another machine, and I send him the Windows Vista Home Premium install disk, that this would be the legal way to do it? If that is the case, then i'll just completely re-format, and send the buyer all the software with the PC. Rather than reinstalling all of it. Am i right on this?

What I am saying is that you can transfer the licence for software (including Windows) to another person, but you cannot then keep the same software legally on your own computer, unless you legally own another copy.

So those people who install Windows and Microsoft Office, etc, on a used computer before selling it are breaking the law.

I am not saying anything about whether you should or should not do these things. I am merely stating the legal position.

You don't have to have any software on a computer when you sell it, you can leave it blank.
