    New Laptop/Enough memory?
    « on: May 19, 2008, 10:50:53 AM »
    Hi,

I am about to buy the following laptop:

    Hewlett Packard KE009ET#UUZ
    6715s Sempron 3800+ (2.2GHz) 1GB DDRII 667MHz(1DIMM) 120GB(5400rpm) DVDRW.

I will add to it 1 gb ram, so to have 2 gb total.

I will get vista and an antivirus.

Will it be able to handle such programs?

    thank you.

erm- which programs? Vista and antivirus isn't a productive combination, at least not without other applications.

Personally that would handle anything I could personally throw at it. Then again I'm comparing it to my relic Thinkpad, 75Mhz with 8MB of RAM, so it could be a bit biased. As Calum asked, what do you intend to do with it?
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

      Thank you for your reply.

My cousin will use it for letters, emails, internet surfing, skype comm and maybe to watch some photographs.

Well, I was thinking about norton, although it slowed down my computer as well. I would have preferred to have avast or avg, but she does not have much experience with computers/viruses.

I find Avast to be very user friendly. It updates automatically.  You have to register every year, but it is a simple process. I find Avast to be as easy to run as Norton, uses way less resources to do it's job, and does the job better.

If your cousin is set on Norton, the computer will run it fine.

1Gb of RAM will suffice for simple tasks like that, although I too would get 2Gb if Vista is involved.
Avast or AVG offer good protection with much less impact on the system than Norton, also they're free so it'll reduce costs.

            I think you're biased.  ;D

Let me rephrase. The system specs should be plenty to run Norton   ;)

Even the best system specs won't help with dealing with bad programs, and Norton is surely one of them.
This would be my final comment on Norton issue.

My sister is dating one of Symantec's on-staff hackers.  He stays away from Norton and uses AVG.
