    system password gone ?...
    « on: May 20, 2008, 03:44:25 PM »
:'( computer has become unusable. My son (who's almsot 14) decided he didn't like having a limited account and looked online (?utube?) and found out how to change things by getting into the system administrator.    >:( When we put on computer, it shows black screen asking for system password  :o  He told us what he used and I put it in.
Some kind of weird looking blue window came up, gave me choices for removing password, which is what I thought I did  :'(  I was able to log into my husbands account like normal after that. But he shut down the computer by accident (normal way). When computer was turned back on, up came that black screen again asking for system password!  ???  :o  :'(
Since I had removed the password, I didn't understand why this was happening and also why nothing I tried to do would fix it.  When I had originally changed the password, I put in old password son has used, then left  it blank for new password area to "remove" like it said to.
I am not very knowledgeable about computers, but this is something I had never thought to see happen. I myself had never put a passowrd on anything but the users because of reading about what happens when it is lost. It sounds like one huge nightmare. Which is exactly what it feels like now 'cuz microsoft nor Dell will help unless they get thier hands on wads of money that we don't have.
The worst part is that I cant even get the computer to go into "safe" mode or anything. It just endlessly asks for system password that I thought I had removed.  (after all, I DID get husband's user account to open normally and thought things would be fine after that-boy was I wrong  :'(  )
How do I get into safe mode again or anytihng that will let me access any user accounts at all?? None of the F* or ANY other things work...I am at a dead end and have been reading online for past 2 days since it happened. PLZ help!!  :'( :'( :'(
I know I wanted to learn mor about computers, but not like this!! All we have working now is my laptop... :'(

Make sure the BIOS password is not set. You can press a CMOS button on the motherboard or reset a jumper, or remove button cell battery carefully to reset that and put battery back in while system is off.

If it is a password as part of the boot.ini string, like a 3rd party password tool, then you will need an emergency repair disk or a way to boot the system to manually fix this.

You can also use a tool called NTPassword to force change the password of a user, generally an Admin of the system with this tool....

OR..... you are looking at a rebuild of the system or sending it off to the repair shop....

Sorry there is no easier method than the ones above...

we tried the removing battery part already -after reading about it somewhere. That unfortunately did nothing. I was afraid to touch anyting else in the hard drive. Was worried about making things worse.
I don't know what my son did to computer to begin with. I asked him and the only thing he told us was the password HE used , and that he used F2 (F two). i was thinking if he had used  F8 maybe things wouldnt be so messed up, but I dont know for sure since I am not a expert (or anything near it).
Is it possible to use my laptop for making a bootup disc then putting it into the messed up desktop cd drive? Because so far, I can't get nothing but the prompt for system password... :'( :'(

Take it to a repair shop. It may cost a few $$ but it is better than things getting completely messed up.

Without providing a link to the youtube video and/or what your Son installed i'm afraid any advice further at this point would be sheer guesswork...
