Loosing connection.
« on: June 09, 2008, 04:12:04 AM »
Hi ,
For a couple of days my internet connection has been pathetic! I turn on my comp and my internet gets connected for a second and then connectivity is lost  again,It says 'unable to reach gateway'  or unable to reach server etc, but when I click repair button under 'support' option it connects for a second, I know I have to call my ISP home to repair this but I want to know if there is a way to do it myself.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou.

Could you paste the results of an IPCONFIG /ALL into the thread so I can get some more info?
Go to Start, Run, CMD, then type IPCONFIG /ALL.

    Thanks

It pretty shows detailed information about your internet connection.
I honestly don't know why it would be important here but, who knows.

I would try restarting your router and modem. (Unplug them for about 30 secodns)

So Queen.....remember downloading/installing anything before it happened?

    Command Prompt eh?

    Perhaps:

    Code: [Select]
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

But I would think that does the same thing as Repair. I'm not sure.

IPCONFIG /ALL is basic troubleshooting tool, and there is nothing private info there.

    Yeah.

I get something similar to your problem like every month or so. All I do is turn off the computers and unplug the router and modem, wait about a minute and then hook them all back up.

I would but they say they can come and fix it themselves but then I don't want to call them so many times to my place, and I hate to let anyone touch my comp and when they do things to it that I don't understand I don't feel good.

If you're not using a home router, then your computer probably has a "public" internet address (IP address) assigned to it.  A public internet address can be accessed from anywhere in the world.  I believe the Computer Host forum asks (suggests?) that you not post your public IP address to minimize unsolicited probes and attacks against your home network (basically against you personally).

If you're using a home router, it gets the public IP address assigned to its internet interface and either it or you assign private IP addresses to the computers on your home network (which connect to the Local Area Network (LAN) interface of the router).

If you post the output from "ipconfig /all", you should edit out any "public" IP address.  The private IP address is less of a concern because the attacker would need to know the "public" IP address to reach you.  If someone has internet connection issues, it's not unreasonable to ask for the output of "ipconfig /all"; but then again I operate from behind a home router.

That being said, many members of this forum also choose not to display their age, location, or gender.

There's a program out there which is described as a last resort for connection problems caused by file / registry corruption.  We need to see what's on the Microsoft site.

If it was my own computer, I might take a flyer on it, and take chance on the fix.  I will not at this point recommend it to you.

Winsock fix won't break anything. If Windows configuration is correct it'll do just nothing.

HERE is a Microsoft page on the topic -- it's ugly.   ;)

I was just being (overly) cautious, based on some descriptions I read that said the down loadable product was good, but not actively supported.

Good -- Snapfiles is where I was looking, too.  I just wasn't confident enough to "say" Run it! and then have someone come back and say, "It's worse now."   :o

Most of the time when people ask for help, I kick over to an empty browser window and execute a search.  In this case, Snapfiles was the first response!   ;)
