    Problem with LAN...
    « on: June 12, 2008, 10:53:25 AM »
    Hi!

Some weeks ago a company was providing my family and I internet connection, our TV channels etc. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiscali_TV )
    It was DSL, broadband connection.
Now we are not paying for it since May, and I have a LAN connection which a whole buiding is using. I still have the same antivirus, and kept the same settings in windows, but there are some problems now:
    - I can't reset my IP
    - Downloading softwares, P2P softwares (like Limewire) are downloading with 0 kb/s
    - Online games like Counter Strike or S.W.I.N.E are not working either. (Ex; for CS I get "Could not connect master game server to retrieve sever list" error message)

    What should I do?

Thanks for any help or advice !

P.S.: When our company had "technical difficulties" and TV-internet was not working we used the LAN connection (we always had it) and the problems were the same.

That is the whole sentence. I don't know if you misunderstood my post, or just joking but I did point out that I still have an internet connection(which I'm using right now), it's only a different network, and since this change some elements are not working properly.

The other users in building have access to these services?
You may be blocked by firewall (installed on another equipment, not on your computer). If there is a network administrator (for the whole building), please contact him and ask details.

I got a reply from an another forum, that the network has only port 80 open, which only works for web pages. That seems to the problem. I must speak with the administrator, to open different ports. (Which will unfortunately not happen because that building is the embassy where my father is working, and he can't ask to do such things obviously)

          Anyways, thanks for replying.

:) Most certainly he won't :) The administrator has to respect some protocols regarding communications and data safety, if he is not instructed by his superiors to open access to some ports, he won't make those modification from his own initiative or other persons with no responsibilities in data security/communications security (or whatever the name of the department). Unless he wants to answer to some difficult questions regarding his duties :) (and more than that).
You made me curious. The network administrator will give you a politically correct response. Just tell me please what is his answer, it is something that I wish to hear (for satisfying my personal curiosities, how would answer an official to such a demand).

I won't ask it, because we do not have the right to do it, for the reason said above. I myself is curious too, what could he reply to such a request (but I don;t think he would be happy), but we're soon moving, so it would be unecessary to make a risk of asking such a question now.
I was thinking that the problem lies in my internet settings, and that I could repair it quckly, and use a (what is for me) a proper internet for my last two weeks here. :) But everything is more complicated than I thought...:)
