When it asks you to insert driver disk, point it to the file, you unzipped on your desktop.
Windows 98 CD won't help, because it doesn't contain any audio drivers.

Once I go to install it asks me to restart, the installation then begins right after I login to my computer, so none of the desktop items have loaded at all yet :/ I tried clicking "desktop" then O.King it, but the same error message comes up saying that it can't find a specific file and I need to put my driver in.

    You're doing something wrong.
Unzip downloaded file into your desktop.
Go to Device Manager, expand "Sound, video and game controllers" key.
Right click on "ES1869", click Properties, then Driver tab.
    Click "Update driver".
The wizard will open, and point it to the desktop.

My instructions were not fully correct.
You need to uninstall current driver, first.
Right click on "ES1869", click Properties, then Driver tab.
      Click "Uninstall" button.
      Then, proceed with new installation.

No "uninstall" button showed up for me.

On a brighter note, I found my Windows 98' CD and startup(boot?) disc.
There's an ESS audio driver on the CD, but I get an error message when I click "install". "Cannot find XXXX file. Make sure the pathname and filename are correct and all required libraries are available etc. etc."

Should I just reinstall Win98'? Would anything happen to my current files/downloaded programs/wireless adaptor if I did?

        EDIT: I actually tried reinstalling it, but chickened out while things were being installed and shut down because I was afraid i'd lose everything and not be able to get help anymore >___>;; Now i'm missing microsoft paint, wordpad, and god knows what else, hahaha. *digs self a deeper hole* I am such epic fail ;___;

It's been a while since Win 98, but I think, reinstalling Windows over the top shouldn't touch your data.

It's been a while since Win 98, but I think, reinstalling Windows over the top shouldn't touch your data.

You first need to go to the Root folder and rename win.com to win.old.
Then when you re-install 98 your Programs and Data remain intact...
Any other method and you will lose your data and programs.

Sdgfkfd, if I had installed it yesterday without knowing that..

Thanks so much, patio! Where can I find my "Root" folder?

I found my win.ini. It's a notepad document.. right? Atleast, that's what it opened in.

I searched it for "win.com" but didn't find anything at all.

My bad. I keep forgetting, it's Win 98.
You want to find win.com, not win.ini in C:\Windows

Oh, okay. I found it and it opened up a black popup window.

I went to properties(only button other than font that's clickable).

Should I rename the "cmd line" to "C:\WINDOWS\WIN.OLD"?

Sorry if i'm asking too many questions. I'm just paranoid i'm going to mess up again ):

No. you right click on the file, and click "Rename".
