We have never tried to turn it on without the heat sink, we took it off a few times (while the power was off) and looked at it wondering if it was somehow causing the problem, but we never tried to turn the computer on with out it

      Good - don't.

If you've tried all of crafty's troubleshooting steps, the best thing for you to do now is to bribe your uncle over! On a new build, anything can go wrong from DOA parts to improper build.

Kudos to you and your friend for geting this far! :)

Please let us know how you make out.

      Best of luck.

If a psu has 4 +12 volt rails with 20 amps each will that be enough to power my 2 9800 gtx's?

For 2 cards power supply then needs to have (in total) at least 45 Amps available on the 12 volts rails.

        For 1 card i would get 25 - 30 amp on a 12 volt rail.

I already told you above what you need for two 9800 cards. Just make sure you get the best Psu for that system. The Psu is one of the most important things you will get for a computer, so don't go cheap.

        Btw, Thanks for all this...

OK here is the update, the computer booted up and everything started showing up on the screen but when my uncle looked at the mother board a chip on it started glowing red (I'm guessing from heat) so he said basically i need a new mother board, now I'm just wondering what motherboard to get, any suggestions?

You had a new build - are you not going to RMA the bad motherboard and replace it? I don't recall that you mentioned what board you had, but I assume that you researched before choosing it.

I'm a fan of ASUS, if you are going to buy a new board; if I were you, i'd match a board to the components that I already had and with specs that matched my needs. I'm sure that others will chime in with more definite opinions.

Suggest that you start a new topic asking for advice on picking a mb.
