    Dead Drive Problems.
    « on: June 30, 2008, 04:43:39 AM »
I know there is software to retrive info off of drives, but I never messed with a dead one.  Is it possible to self fix it or do I have to send it to maxtor?  There is data I want off the drive.
Windows 7 RC Tester.  Working on it.  Your monitor says etchasketch on the side!

If I fall who is there to pick me up now.  I stand alone but I stand as the gaurdian for whom I wish to protect.  The sound of my blade utters my name as you fall.  For I shall not move.  For those that forsake the very people are wosres

By the way, sending a drive to a company that does data recovery can cost a lot...like $3000.00.

If the software doesn't work your going to have to ask yourself how bad do you want the data?

Hook it up as a slave drive (so it would be Internal).

I have had drives that were sitting around for a few weeks that were toasted. I remeber one of them I banged on the table and it started right up. The bearings were stuck and banging it broke it free.

The motor has an external rotor; the stator windings are copper-colored. The spindle bearing is in the center. To the left of center is the actuator with a read-write head under the tip of its very end (near center); the orange stripe along the side of the arm, a thin printed-circuit cable, connects the read-write head to the hub of the actuator. The flexible, somewhat 'U'-shaped, ribbon cable barely visible below and to the left of the actuator arm is the flexible section, one end on the hub, that continues the connection from the head to the controller board on the opposite side.
