My monitor will not display Windows.
    « on: July 09, 2008, 11:12:53 PM »
I was hoping that there was someone out there with an idea to quick fix a stupid problem I created for myself.
So I have been running Windows XP on a Magnavox 19" 1080i HDTV through a SVGA cable for a while now and it has work fine.  Really crisp.  I accidently changed the display settings to something the TV cannot receive.  The computer boots Windows but right at the point that it should display my desktop the TV sends me a message telling me to Change computer display input to 1440x900 at 60Hz.  Without being able to view Windows, I find this very difficult.
Can anyone give me the keyboard steps to do this, or is there a way to revert to the last display setting?
Any help would be deeply appreciated.

      1.  Windows Advanced Options Menu.  It's time to explore new frontiers.  Tap the F8 key about once per second or faster as you power up the system.  I'm expecting the following menu to appear:
          o  Safe Mode
          o  Safe Mode with Networking
o  Safe Mode with Command Prompt
          o  Enable VGA Mode
          o  Last Known Good Configuration
          o  Debugging Mode
          o  Enable Boot Logging
          o  Starts Windows Normally
          o  Reboot
o  Return to OS Choices Menu

If you get a boot device menu instead see:  what genius decided F8 should be device boot menu

      2.  Last Known Good Configuration.  Selecting this item will load the registry settings for your last successful login.  Hopefully that registry contains the previous display settings.  Not sure if your previous login attempts counted as success.  Give it a try.  You can use your normal user account with this option.

      3.  Enable VGA Mode.  Selecting this option starts computer in standard VGA mode by using the current video driver.  If it gives you a screen you can read, use display properties to restore the proper resolution (1440x900?) and color depth, then reboot to normal mode.  You can use your normal user account with this option.

      4.  Safe Mode.  Loads the minimum set of device drivers and system services required to start Windows XP.  If it gives you a screen you can read, use display properties to restore the proper resolution and color depth, then reboot to normal mode.  You may need the Administrator password to enter this mode.  Password is usually set for Windows XP Pro, blank for Windows XP Home.

      4.  Reference:  What are the Safe Mode options? When should I use them?

I get to advanced options menu but my keyboard does nothing.  I get there by pressing F8, but I cannot toggle through the options pressing up and down. What gives.
Say I was blind and I needed to change display settings.  What keys can I press and in what order step by step?

I accidently changed the settings and my monitor will not display windows under the new settings.  It's telling me to change it to 1440x900 @ 60Hz.
Tried the Advanced options to attemped booting in safe mode, but my keyboard won't do anything.  No up or down to make a selection.
          Really Frustrated.

To boot into Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key.
Never use msconfig, because you may end up stuck in Safe Mode for good.
          What Windows version is it?

it's XP Home edition.  I can get to the advanced options screen that will allow me to select safe mode.  But when I get there my keyboard won't do anything.  I can't move to select safe mode.  The enter key doesn't even work.  I just sit there and watch the thing count down until it boots normally.

            This screen?

If so, what keyboard is it? USB?

USB yes.  I don't understand why that is a factor since I can tap F8 to get there.

Good question, but sometimes USB keyboards misbehave. Try PS/2 keyboard.

Isn't this Topic the same as the one below?  If so you want to close one of them so every one can work on just one.

I guess I'll try a PS/2 keyboard.  I think that my pc has a lot more issues than I'd like to admit, and it might be time to move on.

it's XP Home edition.  I can get to the advanced options screen that will allow me to select safe mode.  But when I get there my keyboard won't do anything.  I can't move to select safe mode.  The enter key doesn't even work.  I just sit there and watch the thing count down until it boots normally.

Check your CMOS settings for the BIOS to ensure USB Legacy Mode is enabled.  While you're in CMOS setup, see what other USB settings are available.  After USB Legacy Mode is enabled, you should have USB keyboard control while at the Windows Advanced Options Menu.
