VIDEO CARD??  What is it???
« on: February 21, 2005, 01:53:11 PM »
HELP!!!  I've been having major computer problems, so I wiped out my primary and it erased everything.

I installed win 98se.  The only problem I am having now is with my display.

I am only getting two choices 2 color and 16 color.  I need 800 x 600 color at least to run a specific program.

My computer manufacturer says I have Diamond Stealth 3 s540 video card.  I downloaded the driver and I can't seem to get it to install.

1.  How do I find out what video card i actually have?

2.  How do I install it properly?

3.  Can I use one of the generic or standard options in my hardware file?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks, Vivian :-[

Also, what link do I use to register for the chat???

1. Click start -> run... In the run box type  dxdiag    ... Press enter. If a small window displays, click no... You should now see a large grey box with all kinds of computer information inside... Click on the display tab, and look at the top-left for video card information...

2. Why can't you install the driver(s)? Any error messages?

3. Explain...

I ran the dxdiag  and this is what I got:

Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
vga.drv

and

Diamond Stealth Video VLB (s3)
s3.drv

I used the add new hardware and installed the driver from there.  It is installed, but I still get only two color choices.  2 color and 16 bit.   Uhhg.   Any ideas on how to get 256 color?

Try running a Windows Update by going to http://www.microsoft.com , and download/install ANY hardware drivers...

Ok! Working on that.  I only have dial-up on this computer.  I have satelite internet on my main computer.

This computer is for my daughter for her schoolwork.  She is homeschooled and her program requires 800 x 600 resolution for it to work.

You wouldn't know anyway around that would you.

Sure! You can always switch to a cable modem, or DSL.... Or you can call your computer manufacturer, and hope that they give you a solution...

Ha - computer manufacturer.  I've spent over 5 hours with tech support this weekend.  And all they me is download this driver it will work.

And that they do not recommend retail windows 98SE for use with their systems.  Is there a reason for this?  They just kept on saying it wasn't recommended.

Thanks for everything.

Vivian - I will let you know what happens next.

oh, by the way, there is not dsl or cable where I live.

Well.... The manufactuer might not have said that 98SE was not recommended, becuase of compatibility issues, or if it just plain did not sell... That's their secret...
